ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (Reuters) - September 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui took the stand on Monday in a sentencing trial that will determine whether he is executed.

Moussaoui, 37, last year pleaded guilty to conspiracy in connection with the hijacked airliner attacks -- the only person charged in the United States.

U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema asked Moussaoui if he would be honest when he testified. He responded, "Yes," and took the stand.

Moussaoui admitted being an al Qaeda member but denied being part of the September 11 attacks that killed about 3,000 people. He said he was meant to be a part of a second wave of attacks and was to fly an airplane into the White House.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Confessed al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui took the witness stand in his own defense for the first time Monday, testifying that he was never intended to be one of the Sept. 11, 2001 airplane hijackers.

Asked by his lawyer why he signed his guilty plea in April as “the 20th hijacker,” Moussaoui replied: “Because everybody used to refer to me as the 20th hijacker and it was a bit of fun.”

Nineteen men were involved in the attacks on New York in Washington in the worst act of terrorism ever on U.S. soil.

Moussaoui testified calmly in his death penalty trial, but against his lawyers’ wishes.

His lawyers made a last attempt to stop him from getting on the stand, but failed. Defense attorney Gerald Zerkin argued that his client would not be a competent witness because he has contempt for the court, only recognizes Islamic law and therefore “the affirmation he undertakes would be meaningless.”

That his role was for a later attack, the White House I think.

But it doesn't matter. They're still trying to throw the book at him for 9-11. Somebody's got to go sit on the electric chair for this. Might as well be him.

"I had knowledge that the two towers would be hit, but I did not have the details," Moussaoui told jurors after taking the stand in his own defense.

Moussaoui said he was not intended to be the 20th hijacker.

Instead, he said, he was supposed to pilot a plane into the White House, with convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid as a member of his crew.

Moussaoui said he did not know in advance the precise date of attack, which unfolded the morning of September 11, 2001.

how could he be the 20th?

doing a certain thing to be used as our government saw fit. It will be useful for the true culprits to have him on the stand testifying about 19 other hijackers. I suspect the planes were remote controlled by Dov Zakheim's equipment and there were no hijackers. A few of these guys may have boarded the planes but I doubt it was for the reason attributed to them. They were patsies.
