US helicopter "foils Iraq strike"

US troops using helicopter gunships have killed seven Iraqis suspected of preparing rocket attacks on a US base in northern Iraq, the US military says.
The attack near Tikrit appears to be part of a more forceful coalition response to increased Iraqi resistance.
US troops are pressing on with a similar operations in Baghdad, where fighter aircraft have been deployed.
Despite the upsurge in Iraqi attacks, troops will stay on after the transfer of political power, the US has said.
