Republicans expect to lose filibuster votes despite 38-plus hours of debate with Democrats

JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer Friday, November 14, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(11-14) 00:33 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

Almost two straight days of debate on President Bush's blocked judicial nominees changed little in a bleary-eyed, groggy-voiced Senate, with Republicans conceding that they can't stop Democrats from successfully blocking two more conservative jurists from the federal appeals court.

"I don't see a way out," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who called for an extra nine hours of debate Thursday night and now is considering suing the Senate to ban judicial filibusters. "Nobody is going to change their votes."

looks like the repukes plans didn't work out like they wanted!!LOL

1. Boo hoo hoo!
I feel sooooo badly for the poor Republicans. I mean, they went out of their way to accept all of Clinton's judicial nominees and this is the thanks they get?! ;-)

4. Out of Touch
What boggles my mind about the whole filabuster is that it demonstrates how incredibly out of touch the Repub Senators are with the rest of the nation.

Apparently, they believed that a highly publicized, well-orchestrated, tightly scripted filabuster would create a public outrage that would generate thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of letters, e-mails and phone calls to force the Democrats to their knees. They obviously thought that the whole world would be watching, rivieted to their TV sets. In truth, NOBODY CARES .

Hatch, Frist and Santorum are so ego-centric that they believe everything they do is "hot stuff" and the nation is waiting with bated-breath for their next pronouncement. It ain't true!

Even better, it was obvious that they were depending on FAUX to create the groundswell. They found out that FAUX isn't as powerful as they thought!

20. Regarding Faux
It is my belief that 75% of Faux's ratings are due specifically to onlookers amazed how outrageously rightwing they are. In other words, 75% of the viewership look at Faux like lookie-lous look at a trainwreck.

24. Way to hit the nail on the head!...We need to start confronting these guys
hard, face to face, letting them know how really small they are.

How they can still be in office can only be seen in their rigged voting.

We need to KICK them out!!!.....permanently!!!!

We need to bear down and get the job done.

9. They also gave the Dems live TV coverage to talk about workers' plights
Every thirty minutes the Dems got a chance to make their case on TV. 3 million jobs lost since smirk stepped into the White House. 8 million to lose overtime pay. No raise in minimum wage in 7 years.

Then the repubs come on over and over saying there never was a gudge filibusted before. Over and over they refuse to change their tune. They are like a broken record.

10. Did anyone see Sen. Corzine last night?
he said his office hadn't recorded one call on Judicial nominees until this started. Since the endless debate started, his office was getting calls on it. However, when his office began explaining some of the beliefs of the Judges who were being blocked, many of the callers were saying things like, "Oh, I don't know believe that" or "I am not sure I want to be on the side of that." Thanks Repubs for helping us educate people.

11. The Democrats with the
exception of one really had their shit together on this one. I'm totally proud of them today. It just goes to show what could be accomplished when they remain unified with a common agenda. Hopefully they will see the success of this strategy and do it a LOT more often.

Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 11:16 AM by Flubadubya
They just had Senator Kennedy on CNN showing him making a statement after the end of the fillibuster. He said that the democrats were just not going to allow this President of the United States to put NEANDERTHALS on the federal bench.

Hah, hah, hah! You go get 'em Ted. God I love that man!

15. FOX this morning jokingly blamed Kennedy for the wind storms yesterday
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 11:24 AM by underpants
Hahahha loss of life haha fires haaha flooding hahaha property damage hahaha

The Douchebag guy on Fox & Friends (I was just flipping by) sort of joked about how if you noticed a lot of wind yesterday afternoon....cut to shot of Kennedy speaking yesterday...hahaha

BTW -Kenendy was AWESOME yesterday afternoon. In great detail he spoke about how the advise and concent clause came into being at the Constituional convention and how they never wanted to give one person (the President) that much power and NEVER wanted the Senate to be a rubberstamp. He also added that the FOUNDING FATHERs never set the rules of how the Senate had to operate.

FAUX was the only station that carried it live. Neither CNN or MSGOP carried the remarks of the repubs live.

This will go down as a hard-fought win for Democrats.

Maybe the experience will re-acquaint them with their spines and balls.

29. The goat was Bill Frist and his poll numbers with a heavy hand....

Wednesday, November 12, 2003
Someone's gonna get fired

Bill Frist posted a question on his Senate website tonight: "Should the President's nominees to the federal bench be allowed an up or down vote on confirmation as specified in the constitution?" A few people saw it, several hundred voted, and Frist was losing. It wasnt a big deal, until Senator Reid (D - Nev) pointed out the fact that people didnt seem to think what the senate was doing was a good idea...

so Bill (or a staffer, i'm sure a staffer will get blamed) CHANGED THE QUESTION.

"Should the Senate minority block the body's Constitutional duty to provide the President's judicial nominees with an up or down vote?" Not only was the question changed, but the tally - which had so opposed the republicans - was left where it was. Suddenly, with over 63000 votes counted, the 62% who'd voted NO were suddenly supporting the Republicans. All the people who'd voted against the Republicans were suddenly having their votes counted FOR them. At this point, it was pointed out that he was being a weasel. Suddenly - thousands of dem votes flooded the survey.... what was the result?

That's right... he CHANGED THE QUESTION AFTER THE POLL WAS CLOSED.

There's democracy for you... REPUBLICAN DEMOCRACY. And you wonder why people fear the electronic voting machines... if the Senate Majority leader is willing to change the question in a vanity poll on his website after the voting is closed, can you imagine what some of the more nefarious people are willing to do to keep power?

But, believe it or not, it actually gets worse.

Even after the polls were closed, votes for Frist's side continued to roll in. I'm assuming these are the overseas military votes, but I didn't think Frist was from Florida. Oh wait, Katherine Harris is on Capitol Hill these days isn't she, now I understand...

30. What a shameless waste of time & taxpayers' money.
But, the Repubs have to keep the fundies on their side, or they might stay home come Election Day 2004, & then it's bye-bye to Boy George & his posse of greedy ideologues.
