Lobbysist Abramoff sentenced to 5 years, 10 months in SunCruz fraud case

MIAMI -- Disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced Wednesday to five years, 10 months in prison by a federal judge for his role in a fraud scheme with a former partner during their purchase in 2000 of the SunCruz Casinos gambling fleet.

Abramoff, 47, and Adam Kidan, 41, won't have to report to prison immediately. They earlier pleaded guilty to conspiracy and wire fraud for concocting a fake $23 million wire transfer to make it appear they were contributing a sizable stake of their own money to the purchase. Kidan received the same sentence.

4. You get longer time for being caught with two joints in the south.
Let's see, corruption, bribery, racketeering, fraud - 5 years.

You get 5 years for selling any amount of marijuana in this country... some places it's anywhere betwen ten years and life - Somehow I think the punishment doesn't fit the crime since he wans't selling weed, he was paying lawmakers off and influence peddling.

23. On to the Boulis murder trial Mr. Abramoff?
http://ftrsummary.blogspot.com/2006/03/ftr-542-interview-with-daniel_16.html

4. Noting some of the evidentiary tributaries running between Daniel’s books and his ground-breaking investigative pieces, Mr. Emory mentions that Atta and company visited one of the SunCruz casino boats on September 11th of 2001. (SunCruz was owned by the late Gus Boulis, a friend of the elder George Bush who was murdered gangland-style in February of 2001.) Daniel mentioned that there appear to have been at least four trips to SunCruz boats by Atta and company, perhaps to launder money. (For more about the Boulis murder and the takeover of SunCruz by GOP bigwig Jack Abramoff, see—among other programs—FTR#516.)

49. Jack's House
:hi:
By HART SEELY
Published: March 31, 2006

These are the men
That fleeced the tribes
That paid the money
That made the bribes
That purchased the Congress that
Jack built.

This is the Duke
That sailed the yacht
That raised the eyebrows
And got him caught,
Who helped Mitch Wade,
Who bought Duke's land
And kicked in 700 grand;
Which raised Duke's taxes,
And gave Duke pain;
So Wade paid the tab
On Duke's capital gain.
Bigger than Abscam:
Randy "Duke" Cunningham!
Top gun in the Congress that
Jack built.

This is Bob Ney,
Who knew the fine print
That could pass a casino
And rev up its mint,
Who spawned the e-mail
Where Jack foretold:
"Just met with Ney.
"We're gold!"
And Ney in 2000,
A moment quite checkered
Ripped magnate Gus Boulis
In the Congress'nal Record.
His tirade was meant
To frighten the fellow,
Who cops say was shot
By Big Tony Moscatiello,
Who got a small fortune
From Jack's pal in D.C.,
A guy Ney said was known
For his "honesty."
Their pal was indicted
And then copped a plea
Guilty of fraud
And conspiracy.
For creating the vibes
That condoned the bribes
That corrupted the Congress that
Jack built.

This is DeLay,
Who built the machine
That redrew the districts
And raised the green,
That decided the races
That claimed the new seats,
That made the new friends
That owned luxury suites,
That held big galas
That brought the donations
That helped him to greet
The great Coushatta Nation!
With 800 members
And fund-stream support
From the famous Coushatta Casino Resort!
Which paid several million
For Jack to abort
A rival tribe's parlor
In nearby Shreveport,
Which prompted the letter
That outlined their claims
That went to Gale Norton,
Co-signed by these names:
Tom DeLay, Eric Cantor,
Roy Blunt, the chief whip,
Speaker Dennis Hastert.
That's the House leadership!
That played the game
And wears the shame
That hangs over the Congress that
Jack built.

This is the Jack,
Jack Abramoff,
Who bought the souls,
Then sold them off,
Who shook the hands
And financed the houses
And feted the staffs,
And hired the spouses,
And fleeced the tribes
And spread the bribes
That ransomed the Congress that
Jack built.

27. There are folks doing much more under Mandatory Minimums...
Take the Rockefeller drugs laws for instance. Nonviolent, first-time possession sentences are doled out 15 years at a time. Yet individuals with vested interests in shaping government policy, at the welfare of Democracy and the citizens it protects are given white-collar sentences and sent away with 5 years, 10 months...

Democracy (in)action at it's finest!

31. What's Jack gonna do?
He's got several options: 1) run like hell for Israel and start making things cozy for the PNAC Members who get caught after him; 2) start singing like a bird to try to reduce the sentence even further; 3) do about a year and a half at Club Fed before Uncle George pardons him.

If you could pull off a $23 million dollar fraud, live high on the hog for five years from it, and then do a year or so in jail for it... would you do it? What if you had stolen millions and millions more than that, and it's waiting for when you get out?

He isn't going to be running anywhere he's now in custody and should start serving his dentence. I would think that he's already sang like a bird, that's why he drew the lightweight time.

His biggest worry now will be staying alive, that and his family staying alive you cross the bfee at your own peril.

A judge has approved subpoenas for ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff
and a former business partner to answer questions about the
mob-style slaying of the owner of a gambling fleet they bought.

An attorney for Anthony "Big Tony" Moscatiello, one of three men charged in the
2001 slaying, wants to question Abramoff and Kidan, according to court documents.

Circuit Judge Michael Kaplan approved the request Thursday, but the subpoenas had
not been issued as of Friday. Abramoff and Kidan are not charged in the slaying.

Their attorneys did not return telephone calls or e-mails seeking comment Friday.

Lobbyist Abramoff gets 70 months
Jack Abramoff
Abramoff has been co-operating in a wider inquiry
Disgraced former US lobbyist Jack Abramoff has been jailed for nearly six years for conspiracy and fraud.

Abramoff - who had close links to top Republicans - had pleaded guilty to the charges, which relate to the purchase of a fleet of casino boats in 2000.

In a separate case, he has admitted to tax evasion, defrauding his clients and conspiring to bribe public officials.

An ongoing federal inquiry is said to be focusing on his dealings with up to 20 politicians in Congress.

The case has sent shockwaves through Washington's political establishment, the BBC's Jonathan Beale in Miami says.

MIAMI - Assuring the judge he is working to become "a new man," disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced Wednesday to nearly six years in prison for committing fraud in the purchase of a fleet of gambling boats.

He will remain free while helping prosecutors with a vast bribery investigation involving members of Congress.

Abramoff, 47, and former business partner Adam Kidan, 41, received the minimum under federal guidelines: five years and 10 months.

The two pleaded guilty earlier to conspiracy and fraud for concocting a fake $23 million wire transfer to make it appear they were contributing their own money toward the purchase of the $147.5 million SunCruz Casinos gambling fleet. Based on that fraudulent transfer, lenders provided the pair with $60 million in financing.

Abramoff told U.S. District Judge Paul C. Huck that he had "started the process of becoming a new man. I am much chastened and profoundly remorseful. I can only hope that the almighty and those I have wronged will forgive my trespasses."

MIAMI - Disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and a business partner were sentenced Wednesday to five years and 10 months in federal prison, the minimum they faced for fraud related to their 2000 purchase of the SunCruz Casinos gambling fleet.

Under their plea agreement, both men had faced a sentence of between five years, 10 months, and seven years, three months in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Paul C. Huck also ordered them Wednesday to pay restitution of more than $21 million.

Abramoff and Kidan admitted concocting a fake $23 million wire transfer to make it appear they had made a large cash contribution to the $147.5 million purchase of SunCruz Casinos. Based on that fake transfer, lenders provided the pair with $60 million in financing.

The same week Abramoff pleaded guilty to the SunCruz fraud, he entered guilty pleas to three federal charges as part of a wide-ranging corruption probe that could involve up to 20 members of Congress and aides, including former House Majority Leader
Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

39. Abramoff - along with Kidan -
Does not have to begin serving his sentences for
another 90 days in order to be able to continue
co-operating in the separate Washington case.

No date has been set for sentencing in the second case, but his
co-operation with investigators is likely to lead to a reduced jail term.
