Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger's swearing-in may be low-key by design, but Monday's events will mix a little Hollywood with pure inauguration tradition -- topped with some Austrian cuisine.
The action-star-turned-politician will have former governors at his side and glitzy guests such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Rob Lowe, Tom Arnold, Linda Hamilton and Vanessa Williams in his cheering section. A few Kennedys will be there, too, including wife Maria Shriver's parents, Sargent and Eunice Shriver.
Schwarzenegger's swearing-in committee is feverishly attending to the details, from overseeing construction of a massive platform on the Capitol's west side to credentialing and dealing with some 630 members of the media, including 129 video camera operators and 70 still photographers. As many as 50 satellite trucks will be wedged in to beam the events worldwide.
...
Costs of the event are stacking up as well, and Walsh said they now are broadly estimated at "several hundred thousand dollars." As is tradition, inauguration festivities are financed by private donors. A partial list on Schwarzenegger's campaign Web site includes about 30 individuals and corporations ponying up as much as $30,000 apiece, including Stockton developer Alex Spanos and a variety of other development concerns and investment companies.
