Bush Visits Mayan Ruins Ahead of Mexico Talks

President Bush, wearing khaki pants and a white, Caribbean-style guayabera , toured a Mayan archeological site near Cancun, Mexico today before sitting down for what he called "very important" trade and immigration talks with his Mexican and Canadian counterparts.

Bush was to meet separately with Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper this afternoon, before heading into three-way talks with the leaders of the United States' biggest trading partners....

***

Fox, who accompanied Bush and Harper on a tour of the Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá, west of Cancun, has praised a bill passed Monday by the Senate Judiciary Committee that would give illegal immigrants a chance to become U.S. citizens....

***

Bush's tour of Chichén Itzá, dominated by a massive pyramid called "El Castillo," represents a rare overseas cultural stop for the president, who has favored in-and-out meetings with foreign leaders.

"I want to thank you for letting us begin our very important meetings at this very significant historical site," Bush told Fox, standing in front of the pyramid this morning. " . . . And I want to thank those who have worked hard to make sure this important part of history is accessible and is available for people to understand the past, so we can better understand the future."...

9. Metaphorically, he couldn't have picked
a better site. If only he would realize the irony and resign.

3. Does he EVER listen to himself? Or does he know he's lying & ignore?

6. Same here! I "walked" down the same way.
And I wonder how Bush, given his natural grace on the bicycle, did negotiate the pyramid.

8. If he tried his trademark strut, he'd be ass over teakettle.
I chose not to climb it either, but really liked visiting there, as well as other Mayan ruins in Belize and Mexico. Of course, I studied about the history and culture beforehand so I had a bit of understanding and appreciation of the history and culture represented by these remnants of this civilization. I doubt Bush did the same.

12. Been there and you can walk down easily by zig-zagging back and forth.

I will agree it is unnerving but I got used to it quickly. Of course I started with a toughy by mistakenly going up the back side of the pyramid of the Magician at Uxmal. That sucker is STEEP! You know you are in trouble when your hand is on a step 4 or 5 steps up and you aren't leaning forward. I am proud to say I never used the chains.

5. Twins?
Why is it he and Fox dressed nearly identical? Is he trying to be "best buds" with Fox or it is to confuse the enemy?

11. Protect the Ruins!
Everything he touches gets ruined. I hope he doesn't do even further damage to the remnants of this lost civilization. :scared:

It's too bad the GOP "civilization" can't disappear, too.
