Insulating Bush: 2004, Plame, Rove, Hadley, & a potentially damaging memo
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 02:55 PM by johnfunk
Once again, Murray Waas uncovers another piece of the story surrounding the outing of counterproliferation NOC Valerie Plame:

PREWAR INTELLIGENCE
Insulating Bush
By Murray Waas, National Journal
© National Journal Group Inc.
Thursday, March 30, 2006

Karl Rove, President Bush's chief political adviser, cautioned other White House aides in the summer of 2003 that Bush's 2004 re-election prospects would be severely damaged if it was publicly disclosed that he had been personally warned that a key rationale for going to war had been challenged within the administration. Rove expressed his concerns shortly after an informal review of classified government records by then-Deputy National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley determined that Bush had been specifically advised that claims he later made in his 2003 State of the Union address -- that Iraq was procuring high-strength aluminum tubes to build a nuclear weapon -- might not be true, according to government records and interviews.

So, it was about keeping the public from knowing that there were serious doubts about aluminum tube intel, among other things!

And how? Rove got between a highly classified paper warning Bush that Iraq intelligence was phonier than Anna Nicole Smith's hooters -- so the boss wouldn't know the truth!

The plan was simple: discredit Wilson by destroying his wife's cover in a cheap attempt to claim nepotistic collusion, blame the CIA, and coopt the press.

Heckuva job there, Hadley and Rove!

Read it all here.

1. One more reason why Rove and Hadley should resign
and Bush should be impeached.

7. Seems we no longer have a choice at this point.
But we've come this far and we're still breathing and we haven't been arrested yet. So, so far, so good.

4. Rove was wrong...
"Bush's 2004 re-election prospects would be severely damaged"...it wasn't and so Rove was mistaken, for a change.

17. Anna Nicole Smith's hooters aren't real !!
:) They are too busy now doing damage control than running the nation. Still pisses me off that the NY times held the illegal wiretap story. May have changed the election outcome.

20. I'd like to know what agencies thought the tubes were for nukes
because, based on what I remember, consensus was it was a no-brainer that they aren't suitable for nuclear enrichment. As usual when the administration admits to a mistake, it is to hide a bigger mistake. The article makes it seem like almost everyone thought the tubes were for nukes, but a small minority in the state department disagreed. More muddying of the water. I bet, in reality, anyone with credibility knew the tubes were for conventional weapons.

21. State, the Dept of Energy and some at the CIA panned the nuke story
That leaves NSA (Rice was pushing it) and WHIG at the Pentagon - both filled with political loons.

26. This story is useless if sources won't speak publicly
Waas' sources won't allow their names to be disclosed, so only people on the Left care about his reporting. This is a travesty because, without the names, nobody will take Waas' reporting seriously. His sources are cowards since they are witnessing extreme corruption in government, but won't speak publicly about it -- which means nobody will take them seriously. I'm tired of these "unnamed" cowardly sources informing reporters that their government is falling apart (e.g. during the run-up to the Iraq invasion), but won't allow their names to be used to backup their contentions. Waas has done great reporting, but it's meaningless without NAMES.
