2. Avoid Radar?
Being undetectable might be possible, but to physically avoid radar is not. Picky, but science is like that.

37. Radar does not work underwater
and from the test firing I saw on the news it makes plenty of noise to be picked up by sonar. The problem is that a submarine or ship would have to get a homing torpedo off quickly to intercept it.

8. SS-N-22 Sunburn
I thought it might be that as well, being tested--or at least some variation of this missile.

I think you can at some point track this missile by radar, but it's speed is so fast, there isn't a whole lot of aversion you can do, once you do spot one...

20. This system
was a joint development by Russia and us defense contractors. We used it as a drone. IE something to test shooting down.

The sunburn has picked up a reputation from Rense. However Jane's defense has a more realistic view of what it is and what it does.

22. Agreed...
Russian military contractors are just as likely to exaggerate the merits of their products as anyone else in order to get the sales...

Sure in fact this missile has been misclassified by NATO for decades and the program covers a couple of missiles (hybrids?)...as Jane and other point out, the thing has never been 'war' tested like say the exocet or the harpoon...so who knows, the Iranians might have been sold a 'maginot line' by Russian hucksters out to sell 'bad tech'.

God knows Congress and other governments have been talked into spending billions for years by contractors with little more than an powerpoint presentation and a few good old boy handshakes.

Besides, if history is any indicator--the missiles might be very successful and all that will happen is the same thing that happened with the Exocet.

Thatcher demanded and GOT the 'codes' from the French after the Sheffield attack. She threatened the French with war. I can definitely see the Russians doing the same, if the missiles prove to be formidible.

10. Iran missile test successful
Revolutionary Guards air force chief says missile has ‘stealth capabilities, high maneuverability, pinpoint accuracy and radar avoidance features’

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3234686,00.html

<snip>

"Iran on Friday successfully test-fired a missile that can avoid radar and hit several targets simultaneously, the air force chief of the elite Revolutionary Guards said.

"Today, a remarkable goal of the Islamic Republic of Iran's defense forces was realized with the successful test-firing of a new missile with greater technical and tactical capabilities than those previously produced," Gen. Hossein Salami said on state-run television.

Salami said the Iranian-made missile, which he did not name, was test-fired as large military maneuvers began in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea.

"This missile can simultaneously hit several targets, has near stealth capabilities with a high maneuverability, pinpoint accuracy and radar avoidance features," Salami said."

15. multiple warheads
Most strategic missles have multiple (3-10) indpendently targetable
warheads. Fiscal efficiency, y'know...only one launch vehicle needed
to destroy humans in many different targets. How thoughtful...

11. This is called posturing
Who knows if they really did or not, by the very nature of their claim you can neither prove nor disprove it.

This is not unlike the person who says don't mess with me I'm a black belt in Karate. They may be and you may be about to get your ass kicked. Then again they may just be posturing to try and keep you from kicking their ass.

17. It would be unwise to simply ignore the possibility of what they may have
...or of what they could do militarily.

As for relying on our "intelligence" sources to supply that information... Well, we've seen how well that's worked in the past.

21. Reality Check
Iran has no naval capability. No deep water navy. No pacific fleets (plural), no ability to launch stealth attacks with conventional or nuclear weapons. No second strike capability. No ability to maintain air cover. No ability to fight an open war with the us or europe.

Basically no military to fight with. They are fine at funneling money to the insurgency and hezbolla but beyond that they are a 3rd world nation using soviet era equipment.

Does this mean we should attack them, no.

money... and they have outsmarted us in Iraq... and they can bring the economies of the world to their knees by blocking the Strait of Hormus...

If people think this is like attacking Iraq they would be very very wrong!!!

26. Reality check: The US has all of the above.
Deep water navy. Pacific fleets (plural), ability to launch stealth attacks with conventional or nuclear weapons. Second strike capability. Ability to maintain air cover. Ability to fight an open war with all the rest of the world combined.

Yet it's been a draw with an enemy that had been disarmed.

not trying to justify conflict. Just stating in an open war they are wasting their time.

Tactics are different in an insurgent war and an open war.

30. Not necessarily - remember the war game where the U.S. fleet was sunk?
This story came out before the Iraq invasion.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,787018,00.html

Wake-up call

If the US and Iraq do go to war, there can only be one winner, can't there? Maybe not. This summer, in a huge rehearsal of just such a conflict - and with retired Lieutenant General Paul Van Riper playing Saddam - the US lost. Julian Borger asks the former marine how he did it

Friday September 6, 2002
The Guardian

At the height of the summer, as talk of invading Iraq built in Washington like a dark, billowing storm, the US armed forces staged a rehearsal using over 13,000 troops, countless computers and $250m. Officially, America won and a rogue state was liberated from an evil dictator.

What really happened is quite another story, one that has set alarm bells ringing throughout America's defence establishment and raised questions over the US military's readiness for an Iraqi invasion. In fact, this war game was won by Saddam Hussein, or at least by the retired marine playing the Iraqi dictator's part, Lieutenant General Paul Van Riper.

In the first few days of the exercise, using surprise and unorthodox tactics, the wily 64-year-old Vietnam veteran sank most of the US expeditionary fleet in the Persian Gulf, bringing the US assault to a halt.

31. yeah
i remember the story how the air marshals hated to wear business clothes, they were pissed (so it seemed). Then the story about the guy who got shot in miami, by an air marshal in a Hawaiian shirt.

i will repeat, there is no scenario where iran will win a naval engagement with the us navy.

32. Do you ever feel your words are falling on deaf ears?
The fact that the move "Down Periscope," in 1996 was illustrating exactly that sort of scenario, suggests that there has long been a culture of changing the rules half way and trying to force an outcome that justifies whatever tactics the top-brass have already decided on.

Speaking of which, my favourite lines from the movie:

Rear Admiral Yancy Graham: "You watch yourself, Dodge. You are addressing a superior officer!"
Lt. Comd. Dodge: "No, merely a higher ranking one"

thousands of sniper with night vision, plenty of c4-like with remote controls and that is already a distant war US cannot win.

nowadays, with all allies, US can probably form a huge coalition.

The only thing you missed is that at the first appearance of Iran getting ready to use first strike weapons including SCUD, SS-2X and such. US airpower will cripple things. Not a good thing to do or to prevoke.
