Drudge: U.S. casualties from Iraq war top 9,000
http://www.drudgereport.com/flash1.htm

The number of U.S. casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom -- troops killed, wounded or evacuated due to injury or illness -- has passed 9,000, according to new Pentagon data.

In addition to the 397 service members who have died and the 1,967 wounded, 6,861 troops were medically evacuated for non-combat conditions between March 19 and Oct. 30, the Army Surgeon General's office said.

That brings total casualties among all services to more than 9,200, and represents an increase of nearly 3,000 non-combat medical evacuations reported since the first week of October. The Army offered no immediate explanation for the increase. A leading veterans' advocate expressed concern.

"We are shocked at the dramatic increase in casualties," said Steve Robinson, executive director of the National Gulf War Resource Center. Of the non-combat medical evacuations:

3. That's luna's fatality number, not wounded number
For wounded they have 2309, which is still a farce!

6. That's probably only the combat-related number.
Though I have no idea why the non-combat evacuation numbers are so high. Heatstroke?

5. I would like to see their definition of
non-combat. Are they trying to cover up for * and his stupid "mission accomplished" claim?

13. wondering the same thing
I wonder if those are due to wrecks or some other injuries when they are not directly fired upon. 6,000 is a lot considering I read an article awhile back about a soldier that had suffered brain damage and was forced to continue duty. If a brain damaged soldier is forced to continue I wonder what exactly happened to the 6,000 soldiers that were medically evacuated. Maybe they were just classified as "non-combat" when in fact they were actually combat related. That wouldn't be suprising.

Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 07:18 PM by jenk
Probably more like 1,000 with non combat injuries and 8,000 wounded in combat.

it makes more sense considering there are dozens of attacks a day.

15. What ever happened to the story
about all the soldiers sick and dying from lung related disease possibly related to vacine? I haven't seen anything else about it (course what happened to the Wilson/Plame story or any of the rest). And maybe some of these numbers have just been 'withheld' from us until now. I don't trust a word they say.....
