Opposition to USA Patriot Act swells in Nevada
(11-14) 12:23 PST LAS VEGAS (AP) --

Rebecca Foster couldn't believe it when a bank cited the USA Patriot Act and asked her and fellow homeowners association board members for their Social Security and driver's license numbers and dates of birth.

"They said they had to check us against a terrorist list," said Foster, a grandmother who heads a five-member board that oversees a Las Vegas community. "That seemed kind of preposterous. None of us are terrorists."

<snip>
A broad spectrum including liberals, conservatives, Libertarians, gay and Hispanic activists rallied in three corners of the state this week, calling for Nevada to join Alaska, Hawaii and Vermont and 210 U.S. communities that have passed resolutions urging curbs on the Patriot Act.

1. Rather ironic....
... since most "homeowners associations" I've encountered are comprised of obsessively nosy control freaks whose purpose is to make sure their little Stepford communities aren't contaminated by anything remotely resembling individualism or free expression. Perhaps there's an object lesson here somewhere.

2.  nosy control freaks - you got that right
I got letters from my ex homeowners asssociation saying:

My dogs bark too much (so did all the neighbors dogs)

My grass wasn't green enough (I was trying to save money on my water bill)

I had to take my pro Dem sign off my lawn (but the neighbor kept a pro Repub sign on his)

I felt like putting a couple of old couches and used cars on the lawn just to spite them!

4. I wonder...
... who has the most bizarro story about homeowners' associations? There was one in our area who took a couple to court because they had a bird feeder, which their HA said violated the rules about "attracting wildlife." I'm only surprised a homeowners association group would get its nose out of joint about the Patriot Act -- seems it would be right up their alley. Guess that shoe fits a little tight when you try it on the other foot.

"They came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Catholic.

Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak out for me."

6. Keep it up, George, and Nevada goes Democratic in 2004
Georgie's "Patriot Act" nonsense coupled with his broken campaign promise will help Democrats win Nevada in 2004

President Bush's selection of the controversial Yucca Mt., Nevada, site to perpetually store up to 77,000 tons of the most toxic substances humanity has ever produced violates a campaign pledge he made in September, 2000: "I've said before, I believe the best science must prevail in the designation that would send nuclear waste to any proposed site -- either on a permanent or temporary basis -- unless it has been deemed scientifically safe."

I understand a lot of Nevadans are P.O.ed at W for his flip-flop on Yucca Mt.

8. Let's have a standing O for the territories of Alaska and Hawaii giving
Bush and Ashcroft the finger. My borough voted against
the Patriot Act too. BRAVO TO THE EXTREME PORTIONS OF
AMERICA!

Now, lower 48 ... get with it. :)
