CNN/AP: Minutemen return to U.S. border watch
Minutemen return to U.S. border watch
Members instructed to call border patrol, not confront migrants
Saturday, April 1, 2006

THREE POINTS, Arizona (AP) -- Minuteman volunteers concerned about the continued flow of illegal immigrants across the border from Mexico gathered Saturday with lawn chairs, binoculars and cell phones for a new monthlong campaign aimed at raising public awareness of the issue.

A year after their first watch-and-report operation along the border in southeastern Arizona, members of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps embarked on a much larger effort in the busy migrant-smuggling corridor....

***

No one in the group had any illusions about their campaign's effectiveness because it targets a relatively short section of the border for just a month. However, it comes at a time when Congress is debating proposals seeking to reform immigration laws, which have drawn supporters of legitimizing illegal immigrants to demonstrations in cities across the country....

***

Along with their binoculars, cell phones and radios, a number wore sidearms, including state Rep. Russell Pearce, a Republican and a leading voice in the Arizona Legislature calling for a crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Those planning to patrol were under strict orders to call the Border Patrol and to avoid confronting intruders or drawing their weapons, said Simcox and Stacey O'Connell, in charge of the Arizona chapter....

Their only job is to spot people crossing the border illegally and then call the Border Control. What's so bad about that?

40. and some claim Bush is doing a great job
I call them drones but I don't see what this has to do with the topic of ILLEGAL immigration, by the way why is it okay for Mexico to protect its southern borders yet if the issue is brought up here anyone who tries to make any attempted to stem the flow is called the usual names like "Racist", "KKK member", "Right Winger", "Nazi"?

"We are working in the inner part and in the southern part of the country to stop migration flows that come from Central America that are crossing illegally the southern border of Mexico," - Vicente Fox

Can you imagine the outrage if an American politician said that here?

"Mexico has caught and sent home some 240,000 illegal immigrants in the past year" - Washington Times

Can you imagine the outrage if this was being done here?

23. Respectfully I doubt those are actual "minutemen"

I'm skeptical of bloggers and would need to see some mainstream validation of that picture. The minutemen of Az and TX hate nazis even more than illegal migrants.

Its true that neonazi's might support the efforts of the minute men, but thats not the same thing as saying they are the minutemen.

26. Not that they are minutemen
but that their tactics draw these kinds of supporters. Why not invest their energies in making an actual *change* instead of taking matters into their own hands? This situation is better left to the trained, professional border patrol agents.

BREAKING!!! Jaques Cousteau Discovers Water is Wet!!!!!
and head of Minutemen discovers the Minutemen are a bunch of knuckledragging racists!

Texas Minutemen head quits, cites racism in group

The head of the Texas Minuteman Civil Defense Corps has quit, saying he has been unable to overcome racism among members in Goliad.

National leaders say the resignation of Bill Parmley won't have any effect on the planned actions targeting illegal immigrants in Houston and other Texas cities this October.

However, they also acknowledge Parmley was a driving force in organizing that effort.

It was Parmley's idea to run operations in Houston targeting day laborers and the contractors who hire them. And Parmley, a petroleum geologist and landowner in Goliad County, bought the plane tickets to fly in national Minuteman leaders from Arizona last month to begin organizing efforts here.

Parmley said he has become concerned that some of the Minuteman activists in his region have a vendetta against the Goliad County sheriff, who is Hispanic.

He asserted they also have made comments about shooting illegal immigrants or letting them die from dehydration.

"That's their mind-set, and I don't want my name and my reputation associated with a group of people who are racist like that," he said.

10. well
i doubt most are a danger. Id happily go sit on the border and report illegals crossing.

My biggest beef with people who are protesting tougher immigration is... they want a free meal ticket. If immigrants paid taxes just like the rest of the US Citizens, I wouldnt be so angry. As it is right now, they are using government funded services, th at are in turn funded by US taxpayers. It doesnt take intelligence to realize that.. you need money going in, to have money coming out.

If it keeps up. There will be no more healthcare, living assistance, ect. Im not racist. I have many friends, from many walks of life. I respect them all. I dont respect those who cheat the system and get the services that are provided by and for the taxpayers, without putting anything back into it.

I like the idea of making illegals go through the citizenship process, pay back taxes for the time they've been h ere, and learn english.

You can beat your bottom dollar, that if americans went to another country, lets say.... Japan for instance. Started crossing into their borders illegally, and making them make signs, menus, etc in english, they'd line us up and have us shot. I agree the US is tolerant. But there is a point when tolerant turns into getting walked all over.

Im not a freeper. far from it. Im a registered democrat, and agree with most of the things that are on our side of the fence.

Conclusion: Should we give Amnesty to the illegals. Sure. But make them learn english, pay back taxes, and have criminal background checks from their home country.

19. I call bullshit
Illegal immigrants pay taxes. Or do you really think they walk out of stores without paying sales taxes. And the places where they live...yeah, I bet their landlords give them a break on their rent so they don't have to cover part of the owner's property taxes. What. Ever.

28. And in most cases there are deductions from paychecks as well.
It is a lot more plausible for a corp to claim that they didn't know that they hired an illegal than it would be for them if they got busted for hiring workers under the table. Most of them have payroll deductions that they can't benefit from.

21. That was the big scare last spring on DU.
The Minutemen would go out shooting brownskinned people, there'd be a bloodbath, some of the Mexican polleros would be much tougher and the Minutemen would get their collective and individual asses kicked by MS-13 (?), a Latino gang. A couple of posters seemed to nearly drool with righteousness at the idea of the racist idiots being arrested for murder or mayhem; more than a few seemed to expect it with a bit of fear and revulsion.

There was one charge of an immigrant being forced to pose for a picture against his will, with accusations of illegal threat of force and violation of civil rights; the immigrant later said he was put up to it by an immigrants' rights/anti-Minutemen group.

If I were out there, I'd want a gun, some damned to topo maps, a radio with 10-mile range, and a lot of water. Lack of any could be fatal.

It's legal because the property owners give them permission (or the property is federal/state owned, and therefore public), the Minutemen are breaking no laws, and the Minutemen are fairly respectful of property and property rights (when they're caught trespassing or damage property, it's usually an accident, they apologize and leave). On the other hand, many immigrants aren't respectful of property and property rights, often don't have permission from the owners, and the immigrants are breaking at least two laws in many cases (crossing border, trespassing). Law enforcement is thin on the ground in rural Arizona/New Mexico/Texas, and they have their hands full with trespassing complaints and property damage (along with the usual other crimes).

Well, are they? Huh? Apparently they don't care about the imminent threat posed by the hordes of hosers massed along that border, just ready to swoop down on us and bring their damnable hockey, Timmies, good beer and affordable health care with them.

And just what, I ask you, are these "Minutemen" doing about that while they're fixated on hunting down brown people along the other border?!

:sarcasm:

edit: Could I be Canadian? I couldn't spell "about"! :-)

U.S. 'Minutemen' want to patrol Canadian border

Updated Wed. Apr. 27 2005 5:59 AM ET

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — A civilian patrol group that has been monitoring the Mexican border for illegal immigrants wants to expand its mission to the Canadian border, organizers said Tuesday.

Minuteman Project leaders said their volunteers alerted U.S. authorities to more than 330 cases this month of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States across a 37-kilometre stretch of Arizona's southern border. Now they plan to extend their patrol along the rest of the border with Mexico and are helping organize similar efforts in four states that neighbour Canada.
