Vieira chosen as Couric's ‘Today’ successor
Co-host of ‘The View’ will become NBC's new morning presence

NEW YORK - A day after Katie Couric announced she was leaving for CBS, NBC has chosen Meredith Vieira as Matt Lauer’s new partner on the “Today” show.

NBC scheduled a news conference for Thursday afternoon to announce its new “Today” host, and a person close to the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that it was Vieira.

The person insisted on anonymity because the announcement had not been made. Vieira is a co-host of “The View” and is a former “60 Minutes” correspondent.

Couric announced Wednesday, her 15th anniversary on “Today,” that she was leaving next month to join CBS news. She’ll become anchor and managing editor of the “CBS Evening News” in September.

6. They already are.
I'm on a mommy board with plenty of freeper types and there was already a big thread whining about how they hate MV.

13. They can all relax. NBC will fix Meredith.
The biggest problem the freepers will have is the same one we'll all have: staying awake while she's on the air.

7. Nice to know NBC has it's priorities
straight. Replacing Couric is the most important news of the day and week. The whole world has been waiting with bated breath for this earth-shattering news. I am surprised they were able to wedge it in the news of the LaCrosse team. Dear God, if you are truly up there in the ether please save us from these banalities.

15. I don't watch network news, I don't watch the Today show
so I admit I am apathetic to the whole Katy Couric affair, but I think a lot of people are making something out of nothing. I don't think Ms Couric is going to cause more than a handfull of people to go to CBS for network news and stay there for weeks and months.
I don't know what motivates people to watch a nightly network news show, but I suspect it is not the girl next door.
I can see NBC trumpeting Viera, because they make a lot of money off the Today Show.
