Legislature votes to outlaw dog-hog fights in Alabama

The Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A backwoods fad popping up along the Gulf Coast — staging bloody fights between dogs and wild hogs — is getting outlawed in Alabama.

The Alabama Senate voted 26-0 Thursday to make it a crime to stage, promote, attend or supply animals for hog-dog fights. The bill, which passed the House in February, now goes to Gov. Bob Riley for signing into law.

"I'm always amazed when people think it's sporting to be cruel," Sen. Larry Dixon, R-Montgomery, said.

< snip >

The events, often called "hog-dog rodeos," involve putting a trained attack dog, usually a pit bull or American bulldog, in an enclosed ring with a wild hog. The dog chases down the hog and grabs its ear or another body part while spectators watch. Over the course of one event or rodeo, 50 dogs or more will be put in the ring with hogs and the dog with the best time at catching the hog wins.

4. Everything is legal until it's made illegal.
It's a recent fad, so there wasn't a law to stop it. That's now being corrected.

3. wouldnt it fall under other laws...
You would think this might fall under animal cruelty laws, etc. I do not know how strong animal cruelty laws are in Alabama though...

20. When will the idiots taking part get in the ring?
C'mon...you want bloodsport? Don't wuss out and send your dog in against a hog, big man. Why don't you throw down with another drunken moron and see what happens.

See, that's the thing with a bloodsport where animals pay. It's 99.999% of the time run, promoted and frequented by "people" that couldn't/wouldn't compete otherwise.
