Authorities Find Congressional Candidate Alive In Woods
Authorities find man missing after accident

DOVER, N.H. (AP) _ New Hampshire State Police say they have found Gary Dodds, a congressional candidate from Rye, alive in the woods.

Police at the search site say Dodds is moving in and out of consciousness, and needs medical attention. His wife Cynthia, who was helping with the search, was on her way to meet him.

Dodds, who is 41, had been missing since a single-car accident on the Spaulding Turnpike in Dover last night. When emergency workers arrived, the car was empty.

A search involving State Police and dog teams followed.

Dodds is the chief financial officer for Accent Magazine and serves on the Rye school board.

The Democrat is trying to unseat Republican Congressman Jeb Bradley.

2. From another paper:
A volunteer searcher and her dog found a missing congressional hopeful alive in the woods Thursday night, more than 24 hours after he disappeared after a car accident.

Gary Dodds, 41, of Rye, was found around 10 p.m., about a mile from the accident site near the Dover tolls. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

Fish and Game Lt. John Wimsatt said Dodds had crossed the Bellamy River and was slipping in and out of consciousness when found...

The searcher who found Dodds said he was about 100 yards from some houses and had covered himself with leaves to stay warm. He called out to her as she approached.

13. I hear from someone
who met him that he's a really empty suit AND that he's been cheating on his wife. The person wasn't all that surprised to hear of the incident - says he's just weird. And no, the person wasn't a wingnut but a perfectly respectable progressive.

Don't know a thing about him other than that.

14. Interesting
I think he could turn this into an effective ad. Just make a tv ad showing him swimming across a river, burrowing in pine leaves with the voiceover "Gary Dodds can survive the toughest elements nature has to offer. He's ready to take on Washington DC."

17. Wow they're already murdering our party members
I would have thought they'd wait to legalize wire taps. Good thing 'left for dead' isn't always accurate.

18. Sounds like a real ordeal he has encountered.
"He believes he may have swerved to miss a deer or something in the road," Cynthia Dodds told WMUR-TV. "He jumped out of the vehicle. He thought it was on fire."

After that, "he remembers he was in water over his head," she said.

She said he recalls crawling, covering himself with pine needles and staying under a tree to conserve energy. He was cold and hungry, she said.

Fish and Game Lt. John Wimsatt said at some point Dodds swam across the Bellamy River. He was slipping in and out of consciousness when a volunteer and her search dog found him, Wimsatt said.

The woman said Dodds was about 100 yards from some houses and had covered himself with leaves to stay warm. He called out to her as she approached.

Cynthia Dodds said her husband is an emergency medical technician who would normally know not leave an accident scene.

When asked if he had been drinking, she said no, describing Dodds as "the straightest, cleanest guy you'll ever meet," who doesn't drink or smoke or have any medical conditions.

21. glad to hear he's been found ...
The disorientation and lapses in consciousness sound like a head injury ... hope it's not serious, and that he'll be okay once he's received medical treatment.
