Mental Patient Charged With Threatening President Bush

A Palestinian man faces federal charges of threatening President Bush over comments made while getting mental-health care, according to an indictment made public this week. News of the indictment raised questions Friday about how to treat such comments by mental patients.

Federal grand jurors indicted Arafat Nijmeh on March 23 on two felony counts of "knowingly and willfully" threatening to harm Bush -- first by telling two workers at his treatment center that he wanted to castrate Bush, then a day later to Secret Service agents notified by the center.

Like, for example, everything you tell your psychiatrist is kept in confidence, and even a court cannot order disclosure, but if you tell your shrink you're molesting kids, the shrink is bound by law and professional ethics to report it.

The indictment says Nijmeh told the agents that his threat "is not too harsh, considering what he has done to my country. If not that than maybe something else, you know?" Nijmeh, 26, later said he was joking.

What's he gonna do, get close enough to the royal crotch with a set of snippers or a steak knife??? He did not even express INTENT, planning, only WANTING, a desire, if you will. And he mitigates his idiotic wish by making a remark about degree of harshness of his proposed punishment.

Go into any coffee shop in the land, and I wouldn't be shocked to hear similar sentiments expressed, what with rising gas prices, rising heating prices, increased local taxes, decreased federal services. Wanting ain't doing. This had EVERYTHING to do with the ethnicity of the speaker, IMO. If Joe Sixpack said it, the doctor probably would have joked about locking up his scalpels.

That said, it's a cautionary tale. Ari said it--watch what you say, watch what you do.

I worked in the mental health field for awhile back in the eighties, and many clients would make threatening statements towards Reagan. None were turned over to the authorities, because d'uh, these people were ill and needed help.

Sounds like a bigoted, RW psychiatrist heard this and decided to teach this poor man a "lesson"

When the new privacy rules came out, my doc's office gave me one to sign -- and there was something in there about how my doc would report to the gov is I sais anything threatening the prez. Well, not just me. Everybody. And this is a general practice doc.

Granted, I'm new here, but I rather thought (on what I thought was good authority) that there were intelligent and interesting people around. This particular thread does not bode well in that regard.

to feel like threatening the current tenant of the White House, you have to be seriously mentally ill. In the case in point, this knowledge is of course confirmed by the means of aggression considered, for you have to be seriously mentally ill to feel like performing such a useless procedure.
