Storms, tornadoes batter Nashville area
Damage reported; tornado warnings in parts of 3 states

Storms move through Tennessee.

(CNN) -- A line of severe thunderstorms and multiple tornadoes swept parts of four states on Friday, with reports of damage north and west of Nashville, Tennessee, authorities said.

As of 4 p.m. ET, 11 counties north and west of Nashville were under tornado warnings, along with one county in Kentucky, seven in Indiana and one in Ohio.

At least two tornadoes were reported to have touched down outside of Nashville. The National Weather Service said weather conditions were expected to worsen as a cold front moves in Friday evening.

"This has the potential to become a very dangerous situation," a NWS advisory said.

The NWS said two mobile homes were destroyed north of Charlotte, Tennessee. CNN meteorologist Reynolds Wolf reported tornadoes touched down near city hall in Goodlettsville, north of Nashville, and in Greenbrier, northwest of the city.

President declares Dyer, Gibson counties disaster areas

President Bush has granted a request from Gov. Phil Bredesen for a Presidential Disaster Declaration for Dyer and Gibson counties for the damage caused by tornados and severe storms earlier this week.

As a result, those counties are eligible for federal assistance in rebuilding. Storm victims are encouraged to call the Federal Emergency Management Administration's teleregistration number to get the assistance process started. The number is 800-621-FEMA and the Web site is www.fema.gov.


"In order to get help, anyone affected by tornados or other severe weather Sunday and Monday in Dyer and Gibson Counties should call the numbers provided by FEMA immediately to register for assistance," said Bredesen through a release announcing the declaration.

Severe weather, including three tornados, hit upper West Tennessee on Sunday night, killing 24 people and damaging or destroying about 1,000 homes and businesses. Those deaths represent the most weather fatalities in a single day in Tennessee in at least the past 50 years. About 80 people were injured and nearly 20 of those were critical.
