Inmate suing state department of corrections
http://www.battlecreekenquirer.com/news/stories/20031115/localnews/645471.html

A former Battle Creek civil rights activist, who is now a prison inmate, is suing the Michigan Department of Corrections.

The suit was filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Detroit on behalf of Robert C. Mitchell III, who challenges as unfair the telephone system installed for use by inmates throughout the corrections system.

The suit alleges that all inmates must use service from Sprint, which has a contract with the state and that the system is unfairly expensive for those using the phones.

1. Well, he should do his research then
the reason there are CONTROLS on the payphones is because the history of SCAMS and phone spamming that has gone on from the prisons.....from calling people COLLECT in order to sell them a load of crap so they can get people to send them money......to all sorts of things.

They have to install a system whereby ANYTIME an inmate calls someone collect (which they most have to do), the receiver of the call gets a notice of where the call is coming from......

Tell this guy to reform his friends in prison.....and work to get these guys something productive to do. Save the world at the same time, I am sure.

2. HOW do the prisoners get "reformed when no-one can afford a call..
As the mother of a non-violent 25 year old son who is serving 19 months for running away from a drug treatment program and has only a marijuana drug charge on his record- I object to those phone systems that make it way too spendy to stay in touch... The best way to dehumanize the inmate population is to isolate them from friends and family. They limit visits to a few hours on 2 days and sometimes, if there are too many people, you don't get in. They put my 5'6" 140lb weakling in a cell with a 200+ lb 6'2" wife MURDERER who had also molested inmates and my boy got molested. Then they had him testify and kept him in the same jail with all the friends of the lifer he ratted on. If he gets out alive it will be a miracle.

3. My sympathies. Keep the faith.
Prisoner 'phone' systems are scummy rip-offs.

And anyone who believes the robber baron/company store sales pitch about 'security' justifying the unspeakable markup needs to study up.

4. Man.........I feel for your son......
the corrections system is totally backasswards.....

we need to legalize marijuana. This is absurd........

Regardless of his offense, there should be some sort of control over matching of cell mates. I will say some prayers.
