Clinton Describes `Troubling Issues' in Economy (Update6)

April 10 (Bloomberg) -- Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton said the stability of the U.S. economy may be threatened by ``skyrocketing'' health-care costs, widening trade and budget deficits and disappearing middle-class jobs.

``The economy is working really well for many people,'' Clinton, a New York Democrat, said today. ``But if you look just over the horizon and below the surface there are some troubling issues.''

In an interview previewing a speech she will give tomorrow at the Chicago Economic Club, Clinton said, ``the rich are getting richer, everybody else is marching in place'' and ``I don't think that's good for us.''

Asked if the government should step in should General Motors Corp. go bankrupt, Clinton said the government could help by relieving some of the costs auto companies bear for retiree health care in return for getting them to ``expedite a move toward energy efficient products.''

2. I'm glad she's saying this cuz the GOP talking heads are still saying that
the economy is great. I guess that is the only thing they have cuz everything else sucks including the economy.

4. When middle class jobs disappear, we won't be marching in place.

It'll the Bataan death march of the middle class. A lot of formerly middle class people will be falling by the way-side.

5. Gas prices soaring
health insurance unaffordable
real estate unaffordable
college tutition astronomical
no wage increases in 30 years
pensions looted
retirement savings hammered
unlimited interest on credit cards
record setting personal bankruptcies
billions collected in banking fees.

This is "marching in place"? I'd call it the economic death of the American worker.

7. An excellent speech! Putting the econ problems in words Ave Joe knows
Not as smooth as Bill, and does not have Bill's ability to grab the emotions - but a speech head an shoulders above what others Dems are putting together.

But 2 years is a long time - and the other folk will no doubt get better.

Still, not a bad speech for her first formal "big" speech of the 08 campaign.

:toast:

:-)

8. "The economy is working really well for many people..."
It's not working for so many more--which means it's not working.

Hillary needs to get out more. Mix with Americans who have only one home...or none.

9. ps...gas is unaffordable too

Many people are wondering how they can squeeze another $50-$60 out of their monthly budgets.

How many times can she get her mug on TV saying "gas prices are unaffordable" over the next three months? That's how she can really help congressional Democrats.
