Shadows fall on Schroeder over Gazprom

However, last week the scandal received new fuel when the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported the Schroeder government had approved a $1.2 billion loan security to Gazprom. The decision was made at a time when Germany's political future was still in limbo.

Former Economy Minister Wolfgang Clement (SPD) signed the loan security on Oct. 28, after it had been expedited through earlier necessary steps, Der Spiegel reported. A senior official from the finance ministry, Caio Koch-Weser, put his signature under the deal, which would also benefit the two banks involved, Deutsche Bank and the KfW, according to Der Spiegel. Koch-Weser has since joined Deutsche Bank, and so far refuses to speak to the press.
