Former Secretary of State George Shultz couldn't have been more surprised last month on a trip to Germany and Russia as he prepared to meet with dignitaries and political leaders. The former Reagan and Bush Cabinet member expected to be grilled about Iraq, the war on terrorism, the economy.
"But all they wanted to talk about,'' he said recently with a smile, "was Arnold."
And that theme -- the intense magnet that is California's governor-elect, Arnold Schwarzenegger -- was reprised on the domestic front after the devastating Southern California firestorm last month, as hundreds of firefighters and workers gathered at El Cajon Airport.
When President Bush wove through the crowd, he was greeted with applause and respectful handshakes. But the polite reserve of those real-life action heroes dissolved when the familiar face of the governor-elect emerged.
