Scalia says he's proud he didn't recuse himself in Cheney case

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on Wednesday called his 2004 decision not to recuse himself from a case involving his friend Vice President Dick Cheney the "proudest thing" he's done on the court.

..

The case in question involved Cheney's request to keep private the details of closed-door White House strategy sessions that produced the administration's energy policy. The administration fought a lawsuit brought by watchdog and environmental groups that contended that industry executives, including former Enron chairman Ken Lay, helped shape that policy. The Supreme Court upheld the administration position on a 7-2 vote.

Scalia refused to recuse himself from the case, rejecting arguments by critics who said his impartiality was brought into question because of a hunting vacation that he took with Cheney while the court was considering the vice president's appeal.

"For Pete's sake, if you can't trust your Supreme Court justice more than that, get a life," he said Wednesday.

6. Sorry Scalia, but you've done nothing to earn anyone's trust.
Why don't you go get a life? You are rude, obnoxious, and not a very good Supreme Court Judge.

And that super top secret energy policy that Cheney's group came up with has resulted in gas prices that are 84% higher now than they were before Bush/Cheney took office. Considering who was involved in those meetings, doesn't it seem like collusion took place?

So, Scalia, you aren't doing your job, deadbeat. Go get a job you're more qualified for. Like lobbying. I hear there's an opening over at Jack Abramoff's old group.

7. it would be the proudest thing to him
because that allowed Haliburton and Carlyle and the whole corperate fascist regime to officially take over our country. I bet he's proud. He should hang from a tree right next to king george and buckshot cheney. Execute traitors, that's what we used to do with them, now we elect them president.

Yeah, that takes a lot of guts, Scalia, to refuse to acknowledge any sort of ethical consideration and not recuse yourself. Way to stick it to all those people who worry about impartiality and all that bullshit.

13. I don't trust the government, period.
Including the Supreme Court. And I like my life fine, thank you very much. What I want to know is, since when has "trust" in any government official as an excuse to write bad legislation, make bad rulings, and claim absolute power become a hallmark American value? The very structure of the Constitution is based on a healthy mistrust of each component part of the government. We fought wars to preserve the idea that it is not only OK, but good policy to mistrust the government.

Germans gave Hitler their absolute trust 70-plus years ago, and see where it got them.

Trust is earned, and as far as I'm concerned, Fat Tony hasn't earned it. He's hell-bent on making George W. Bush into some kind of a king, and that makes him unfit to serve on the Supreme Court, and unworthy of my trust.

31. No, let him keep talking and making obscene
gestures...he must be feeling pretty comfortable to be acting up like this. Let all of America see what an evil man he is, and then after November, we can have him impeached from his position for all sorts of conflicts.

22. Scalia Should Go On MORE Hunting Trips With Cheney!
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 05:59 PM by AndyTiedye
I have changed my mind on this. I completely approve of Scalia, Thomas,
Alito, and Roberts all going on lots of hunting trips with Deadeye Dick!

(pssst, hey Dick. Those guys are lawyers too! Look just like quail
once you've had a few, don't they?)

I think we could all chip in to make sure they have plenty to drink.
Wouldn't want our VP to get dehydrated in that hot Texas sun.

:beer::beer::beer::beer::beer::beer::beer::beer::beer::beer::beer:

Drink up, and happy hunting!

33. besmirching the Supreme Court...
taking a combative and partisan tone does nothing to assure the public that a Supreme Court justice is worthy of the trust/respect that he implies should be the reality. He is so clueless that he doesn't acknowledge that his own actions are a big part of what has eroded the trust that he seems to believe that he and all justices should engender.
