French woman working for U.N. killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Unidentified gunmen shot dead a French woman working for the United Nations in Afghanistan on Sunday and wounded a local driver, a U.N. official said.

This is the first time a U.N. expatriate aid worker has been killed in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Taliban two years ago.

The French woman working for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was killed in a bazaar in the Ghazni province to the southwest of the capital Kabul, U.N. spokesman David Singh said.

"Two unknown gunmen on motorbikes opened fire on the car of the UNHCR which fatally wounded the international staffer of the UNHCR and her Afghan driver at midday today," he told Reuters.
