Violating rights to curb terrorism is OK: poll
Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 02:57 PM by brooklynite
Nearly a third of New York City voters say it is okay for the government to violate civil liberties in order to prevent terrorist acts, according to a poll released Thursday.

The Quinnipiac University poll surveyed voters about how the police handled protestors during the 2004 Republican National Convention, where thousands of demonstrators were arrested. Most of the charges were later dismissed.

Forty-nine percent of voters thought the police were too aggressive with protestors, according to the poll. Yet 29% of those surveyed said it would be okay to limit civil rights.

"A lot of New Yorkers think the police might have crossed the civil liberties line in controlling protestors," said Maurice Carroll, director of Quinnipiac's polling institute, but they do approve "a couple of control techniques."

2. Incredibly misleading headline. . .
LESS THAN ONE-THIRD of those polled support the headline writer's contention. A vast majority favor the use of technology for above-board, public surveillance of high-crime areas, and those areas conceivably targets for terrorist attacks, but the majority disapprove of violating personal civil liberties.

16. Exactly. Almost 20% think it's God's will that women die from pregnancy
complications and that they shouldn't get abortions even when they will die from the pregnancy.

3. "Nearly a third" means it's OK???!!!
What crap! That headline is horrible -

"Forty-nine percent of voters thought the police were too aggressive with protestors, according to the poll. Yet 29% of those surveyed said it would be okay to limit civil rights. "

So because less than a third of respondents think it's okay it is???!

:wtf:

5. That's what "some" people say.
Some people (including a smattering of New Yorkers) also say the Earth is only 6000 years old.

13. if the FBI had done it's damn job they would have got all the hijackers
without breaking one damn 'civil liberty'

No one is going to complain about someone breaking a rule if it results in the capture or prevention of a terrorist incident. but no, they won't do their damn jobs, agents were onto these hijackers but were prevented from doing their jobs by their 'management'. But no - we still have to have these retarded damn discussions, of course it's OK to break a rule to stop a mass killer, who can't see that? It doesn't follow that you then have to spy on domestic political movements, gay groups, quakers, etc, etc, etc.

Why in the fuck is the name Dan Brown on the no fly list? Someone want to explain that?

Bend over folks cause it's a police state coming your way. And the majority don't give a damn.

6. That "nearly a third" should leave the country ASAP
After all, they have no need of our liberties and freedom.

What is the USA if you remove liberty and freedom? It sure as hell isn't the country I grew up to love.

7. good point ez..they should get the hell out of the usa better still
they should be fighting that war in Iraq for the crime family. it riles me up when they call me a traitor for not supporting the death and destruction in Iraq. Then worst still, when it comes to the govt spying on us all, they say,"if you have nothing to hide then why not support illegal spying" same goes for the crime family, if its good for the citizens then it should be good for the govt yet they deny critical documents be made available.
Those 29% should get the fuck out of our country and leave me my rights to be private.

thanks..

11. And 4 out of 5 dentists recommend Trident for their patients who chew gum.
What the fuck do I care?

It's not like you can violate people's RIGHTS because a small minority of the idiots think it's okay.

Even if it were 80%, it's still wrong because you are acknowledging the violation of RIGHTS.
