McCain Warns of Rough Going for GOP
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Republican Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), reaching out to wary conservatives, delivered some bad news to the party's core constituency on Thursday, warning that the midterm elections will be hard for the GOP.

"We Republicans are going to have a tough race in 2006 because the country is not happy with us," McCain said. "We have a 25 percent approval rating in Congress."

The potential presidential candidate, who skipped Iowa in his 2000 bid for the White House, campaigned for Republican candidates and met privately to court conservatives critical to another pursuit of the GOP nomination.

During his Iowa appearances, McCain refused to change his stand on issues that rankle both the party's establishment and conservatives, including his opposition to ethanol subsidies and a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

McCain does think he was once one of Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders on San Juan Hill in another life.

Thanks, John, I'll make a note of that.

7. How does a presidential candidate win support in the Iowa caucuses if
he opposes subsidies for ethanol? There are more pigs and corn in Iowa than votes for McCain, I believe.

And McCain, by all counts, is in a happy second marriage. Plenty of younguns all over the place, and one much-loved adopted daughter, too. What's it to him if two women or two men want to marry? He endured physical torture in a Vietnamese prison camp for years but he can't stand up to a pack of slobbering neanderthal fundies in his own party?

I don't want this guy to be president.

21. Your wish
is granted.

Actually, John McCain has a snowball's chance to become president. The main reason is that he is not in good health. He has recurring cancer (of the face)? There is some kind of cancer which keeps coming back on his cheek. He's gotten it operated (see the scar on the photo where he's hugging Bush). In some photos, he looks like a hamster with his cheeks stuffed with food.

Not gonna happen.

22. Hi to you cliss. I'm glad you are in a position to grant me my wish on
McCain.

Not a Republican, I could understand why New Hampshire voters preferred him to Dubya in the 2000 primary there -- and by a large percentage, too -- but since then there's been a marked deteriation in his "maverick" profile, destroyed completely by the stumping he did for Bush on the campaign trail against John Kerry.

McCain is smart enough by far to know that Kerry would have made the better president for the nation, but he opted instead for the route he felt would put him in the White House more easily.

Yuck.

Enjoyed your post & say thanks. Oregon rocks!

Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 03:41 PM by xultar
First of all he's setting himself up to be the voice of the party. Second, he's setting himself up to be a truth teller which is what people want after BushCo. Meanwhile he's just as big of a liar and asshole...

Watch his statements in the next few months....you'll see. It is'nt as much about what he's saying as it is about why he's saying it and what his angle is and what he will gain from it.
