U.S creates Arab TV network to boost image
WASHINGTON-Early next year, the United States will launch its
most ambitious effort to change this country's sinister image
in the Arab world: a 24-hour Arabic-language, satellite news
channel.
<snip>
For now called the Middle East Television Network or MTN, the
channel is intended to provide an alternative to several
Arabic-language news channels, especially Al-Jazeera.
<snip>
The government is spending $32 million to launch the
station-....fixing up a TV studio in the Washington suburbs
and testing names with Arabic-speaking focus groups.
<snip>
The news channel by law can't be seen in the United States.
<snip>
To launch MTN, taxpayers will pay $62 million, including the
first year of operation and an estimated $37 million to $47
million a year after that to keep it going.
<snip>
Many will see MTN as a way to express the views of the Bush
Administration, said Adel Iskandar, co-author of a 2002 book
about Al-Jazeera.
<snip>
Some of the toughest choices for MTN will be its words.
Suicide bombers wont be "shaheeds" (martyrs) but the
more neutral "intihariya" which means a suicide.

2. Gee, I can't wait to see Connie Chung behind a veil or
Dan Blather wearing a Turban. I think Anne Coulter ought to opt for the turban.

6. Instead of trying to fix our problems
we start a public-relations campaign that's the war-crimes equivalent of "That's not a bug, it's a feature."

11. How do you say "700 Club" in Arabic?
What a waste of money, and Arabic version of TV-Marti!

How much is this idiotic venture costing the American taxpayers?

14. MTN == The Ministry of Truth Network
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 06:54 PM by bemildred

War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength

Could they be any more blatant?
The silly bastards probably don't even see the connection.

16. Watch the US press corps slavishly cite MTN's stories
It's not just Arabs who will be subjected to this blather. Watch it become yet another conduit - in roundabout fashion - for lying to the US public, too.
