Ga. to pay back pensions for black police
Georgia will compensate some black police officers for pensions they are due but were denied because of their race from the 1950s through the '70s.

Gov. Sonny Perdue signed the bill Tuesday.

Officers who were denied entry into the Peace Officers' Annuity and Benefits fund during the Jim Crow-era are able to file for those pensions, provided they meet one of two stipulations.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports they must either be active law enforcement officers or still police certified.

1. it figures!
<snip>Retired College Park, Ga., Police Department Capt. James Booker said his application to the fund was rejected. He plans to get what's owed to him but said many former black officers will not.

Most of them are dead, said Booker.</snip>

Gee, how nice of them....NOT
What about the family/wife of the officer if she's still alive would she not be entitled to the pension? I know in NC that is the way it works this is not enough Sonny you haven't done jack!

Wait till they are all near about dead and then to top it off they don't allow for the family of the deceased to receive compensation :grr:

That sucks how many from 1950-70 could still be active? Most are long dead 20-25 yrs is about the max and life expectancey for a cop is about 62. Appears Jim Crow won this one too in reality. How many 70-80 yr old cops do you know?

4. Another meaningless Perdue move. Perdue doesn't care about these men
or their families. I sincerely hope that we can vote him out this year but with our 100% Diebold state it will be difficult.

Our only chance is massive new voter turn out which is what we are working on here in NE GA. We are only atempting to turn out Democratic voters, former Democratic voters and potential Democratic voters. we are not going to try and convert any Republicans. Those bastards are a lost cause.

5. It is interesting . . .
I am not a supporter of Sonny Perdue, but he is the first Republican governor in modern Georgia history (if not ever) and this is the first time the Georgia House has been under republican control. Instead of jumping all over him, we should be asking why our democrat leaders did not attempt to make this right a long time ago! Maybe if our leaders had made sure that this was corrected, or never occurred in the first place, we would still have control of the Georgia State offices, Georgia representatives, and maybe, a good portion of the South!
