Bolivia's Morales threatens to bar some US visitors

Apr 21, 2006 — LA PAZ, Bolivia (Reuters) - Bolivia's President Evo Morales threatened to bar some U.S. citizens from visiting his Andean nation on Friday, after Washington denied a second Bolivian official permission to enter the United States.

The U.S. government refused to grant a visa this week to Bolivia's deputy minister of basic services, Rene Orellana, who was scheduled to travel on official government business, in the second such awkward incident.

"I am asking the (U.S.) ambassador to provide us with a list of deputies, senators, ministers and deputy ministers that do not have a visa, so we can avoid problems," Morales said during a speech to Latin American indigenous lawmakers.

"But the moment they give me that list, I will also pass a list to the U.S. ambassador naming the North Americans that have no visa for Bolivia. This is a question of defending our people's dignity," said Morales, a leftist and Bolivia's first indigenous president.

Currently, Americans are not required to apply for a visa to travel to Bolivia.

David N. Greenlee was nominated by President George W. Bush to be the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Bolivia on September 5, 2002. The United States Congress confirmed his nomination on November 14, 2002. Previously, Ambassador Greenlee served as United States Ambassador to the Republic of Paraguay from July 19, 2000 to the present. He was Special Coordinator for Haiti at the Department of State, a position he held from 1997 to 1999. Prior to that, he served as U.S. Delegate (Ambassador rank) and Chair of the Israel-Lebanon Monitoring Group (1996-97), Political Advisor to the Army Chief of Staff (1995-96), and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassies in Madrid, Spain (1992-95), Santiago, Chile (1989-92), and La Paz, Bolivia (1987-89).

Ambassador Greenlee entered the Foreign Service in 1974. He has served as Rotational Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru; Watch Officer in the State Department Operations Center; Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia; Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel; International Relations Officer in the Office of Israel and Arab-Israeli Affairs; Deputy Director in the Office of Egyptian Affairs; and as a student at the National War College. He has won Superior Honor and other Department of State awards.

Ambassador Greenlee was born on June 3, 1943, in White Plains, New York. He received a BA from Yale University in 1965. He has also studied at the Instituto Internacional in Madrid, Spain. He served in the Army from 1968 to 1971, receiving an honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant. His military decorations include the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Vietnam Service Medal, among other awards. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia from 1965-67. He speaks Spanish, French, and Guarani.

Attempted Anti-Bolivia Strike Fails

La Paz, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian government and the media proclaimed, nearly simultaneously Friday, the failure of the national 24-hour strike, considered sponsored by transnational oil corporations, demanding radical official decisions.

Both the strike and a demonstration convoked by COB (Central Obrera Boliviana) fizzled out, chiefly because the most important union bases believe it is premature to pressure the government after only three months in office.

Presidential spokesman Alex Contreras said President Evo Morales thinks that anti-popular interests are behind the social and regional conflicts, particularly in Tarija and Santa Cruz, where the president did not win big in December and, in fact, went to ex President Jorge Quiroga.

Juan Ramon Quintana, presidential minister, assured the government will do its job in reasonable time, not under pressure, and open to dialogue on all well thought out regional demands within the economic parameters of the regions.
