Afghan Roadside Bomb Kills 4 Canadian GIs
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A roadside bomb exploded Saturday as a Canadian armored vehicle drove by, killing four soldiers, the Canadian military said.

The attack occurred at about 7:30 a.m. as Canadian forces patrolled the Shah-Wali-Kot district village of Gomboth, about 25 miles north of Kandahar, Canadian military spokesman Lt. Mark MacIntyre said.

Most of Canada's 2,200 troops in Afghanistan are based in Kandahar, where they have taken over security from U.S. forces.

1. This is going to put more heat on the Prime Minister
The Canadian mission was changed from one of peacekeeping to one of combat and many Canadians are not happy about it. The mission was changed when the Libs were still in power but many Canadians didn't realize it until after the faux Cons won their minority government.

6. Someone please tell me what good our troops are doing there...............
....these days?? Any good they may have been doing has long passed now - at least from what reports I see. So if you can offer some evidence I haven't seen recently please enlighten me.

4. "Canadian GIs"?
Yahoo can be remarkably sloppy with their headlines.

8. Canada does not refer to our soldiers as GIs, that is purely an
american designation but it is not surprising US media use it as all their news items are from a strictly US perspective using US terminology. Here is the same news from a Canadian news outlet perspective:

Note GI is not a term used to describe our soldiers.

10. Would we refer to American soldiers as Tommies?
Same thing.

Whatever the real origin of "GI", it refers to American soldiers, not just to soldiers.

7. Really sorry Canada. But you could "just say no."
Please don't send your troops off to die as a 'courtesy' to America.

Members of the military coalition in Afghanistan will attend a ceremony at Kandahar Airport at dawn on Monday to bid farewell to four Canadian soldiers killed Saturday.

The ceremony will be held as the coffins carrying the bodies of Cpl. Matthew Dinning, Lieut. William Turner, Bombardier Myles Mansell and Cpl. Randy Payne are loaded into a Canadian Hercules aircraft for the trip back to Canada.
