Almost 70 lawmakers sign Bush impeachment letter
NEWFANE -- Almost 70 Vermont legislators have signed a letter urging Congress to begin an investigation of President Bush's domestic surveillance program and the reasons for the war in Iraq and, which would lead to impeachment proceedings, if warranted.

The letter written by Rep. Richard Marek, D-Newfane, was signed by 56 members of the House and 13 members of the Senate. No Republicans have signed the letter.

The letter will be sent to the members of Vermont's congressional delegation.

Marek's letter asks Congress to hold hearings to determine if censure or "setting in motion the constitutional process for possible removal from office" are necessary.

5. The NM Democratic Party voted in favor of impeachment
several weeks ago, so Vermont isn't alone, not by a long shot.

Democrats outside Washington DC are standing up. It's high time those comfy boys in Congress answer the clue phone. If they don't, they should be thrown out of office.

The time to stand by and just watch the GOP ruin itself has come and gone. It's time to stand against them.

2. "...no Republicans signed the letter."
If the chimp is ever removed from office or prosecuted for his crimes, this circumstance needs to be made clear over and over until it becomes part of the American political consciousness-- republicans willfully shielded him at every opportunity, elevating partisan politics to a higher priority than the national welfare. They didn't just do it once or twice out of mistaken loyalty-- they institutionalized aiding and abetting the criminal Bush administration.

13. Slightly OT (but a nice thought during dismal times)
The other day I was watching the announcement of Scott McClellan's resignation. When Bush and McClellan began to talk about how someday they'd be sitting in rocking chairs in Texas talking about these times as the good old days, I had a powerful thought -- more nearly a vision than a thought -- and told the tv "no, Bush, you will never be sitting in retirement in a rocking chair in Texas. You will be retiring to Leavenworth."

I'm no believer that this was any special psychic insight. I do believe it's a rational assessment of the circumstances. Assuming the citizenry can by some means salvage our democracy, I don't think that Bush will be pardoned by his successor. The scale of his crimes, and the growing dissatisfaction of the country, are different from what Gerald Ford inherited. Richard Nixon succumbed to temptations that, while wrong, were not anywhere near as subversive of American democracy as the acts of this administration (which have been treasonous, and I do not say that lightly). Furthermore I believe our nation is less polarized than we were when Nixon left office, and I believe we are growing more united by the day around our common opinion of the "Great Decider."

And if we don't get him, the moment he sets foot in some other nation without the shield of diplomatic immunity he currently has as a head of state, they can arrest him for crimes against humanity.

My last act as a lifelong Republican was to vote in the 2000 primary against that thing currently impersonating a U.S. President. Thereafter I've exercised my option as a Vermonter to affiliate with the Progressive Party (sorry, but I grew up under the original Richard J. Daley and long ago swore never to be a Democrat). It is nice to live in a relatively sane state where legislators are conscious of the danger posed by the impersonator, and which is conveniently located along an international border if things get scary bad.

8. Any idea what percentage of the Dems in the House & Senate
signed. Was it 100% or 50% or less? Just curious how united they were.

12. Don't assume the signatories were all Dems
Vermont has three official major parties. The third is the Progressives, who are to the left of the Democrats, and who hold a number of seats. I'd imagine all the Progs signed the letter.
