Violence begets violence, true, but I don't think it's because of the death penalty. More likely because little boys watch their fathers beat up their mothers -- then they grow up and beat their wives. Or because parents beat their children -- then the children grow up and beat their own children. Even children who are just verbally abused or neglected can develop violent behaviors as a result of this type of abuse leading to anger-management problems or attention seeking behaviors.

I think the problem with these boys is the outcome of their parents attitudes and behaviors, not society. I can't imagine that more than the slightest percentage of people in our society would condone this type of violence.

because one guy thought another guy has been looking at his girlfriend. I include "thought," because the idiot was so drunk, the guy he attacked was NOT the one he saw looking at his girlfriend (and even if it had been, so what?). I saw what was going on and pulled the perp off his victim, and three of us held him until authorities arrived. The guy who was attacked was rushed to the hospital (he recovered, but was in pretty bad shape).

I had never seen anything like this (and, thankfully, have not since), but it really stays with me - the absolute senselessness and brutality of the attack.

Like anything else, there are multiple factors going on here. I think some of it does have to do with the reports of sodomy with a foreign object that are reported in the media. When police officers or military personnel take such action it becomes associated with superiority through authority and/or might. And despite adults recognizing the behavior as abominable, when children hear of figures to whom they are conditioned to give respect engaging in the behavior, it adopts a degree of respectability.

Combine the perversion of utilitarian ethics with a pervasive attitude of a heirarchical society based on "class" distinctions (money and race), you have a recipe for disaster.

I know we live in Houston and Spring is not too far, but this has been shocking and upsetting. Due to the nature of the crime, I think they will throw the book at these boys. As heinous as it is, I really think there is some validity to the study that documented the lack of development in areas of the teen brain that govern self control. How to fit that in to sentencing etc, I don't know. But I do know that some teens sometimes seem to have no self control.

Richard Rogers, who lives next door to the family, answered his door Thursday night with a .357-caliber Magnum in his hand. He said he was carrying it because he was concerned that Tuck would be out on bail.

I live in a mixed raced hood (about 100 houses). The asians here (about 5 houses worth) don't like the blacks that live here. The whites are not liked much either, but they don't seem to bother us as much.

The blacks like the koreans/chinese/vietnamese less than they do the whites. Our neighbor's daughter told us the other day that some black folk down the street were yelling at her while she rode her bike and told her this was a black hood and she and her folks needed to move out.

I grew up here and was an all white hood. When the first black family came here several folks moved out - while my mom and her best friend baked a cake for the new family and welcomed them. Now, 20+ years later, the blacks here have been railing against the white folks (with the exception of our friends across the street - an older black couple who don't like the younger ones and look to us as friends).

Racism is rampant between groups, one incident involving some whites and hispanics only tells a small portion of the story. Our resident crack dealer is vietnamese (and is a close friend of mine). Local child molester is white (and has moved out in the last week, also a friend of mine for many years).

After years of exposure to varied groups I have seen that it is the person that is the issue, not the race. Blacks are as mean to whites here as whites are to hispanics out in CA. Neither is good.

Hating others based on skin color, sex, sexual orientation, etc, is wrong. Period.

Can we please refrain from hoping the murderors get sodomized in jail?

Half of us are asking why these crimes are happening so frequently. Meanwhile, others are hoping the same thing happens to the young men who did this.

Rape is not an acceptable form of punishment. For anything. For anyone. Ever.

Can we please, as a way of honoring the young man who died, vow not to call for the rape of anyone, ever again, even in jest? Please.

I find it odd how something like the display of patriotism is always presented as making a story such as this somehow more surprising, but oh well.

I'm sure they will have a 'greeting' committee there in prison, and it won't be pretty. Right now, apparently, they are segregated, or in isolation, while awaiting trial, because of their notoriety already.

In the Houston Chronicle article about this, in this morning's edition, they interviewed Tuck's mother. They said she timidly opened the door and was crying about the situation, and how alone she was, and how nobody was around. However, at some point, these 2 kids were innocent little kids. How on earth did they turn into these monsters? Like you, I do hold the parents responsible.
