WASHINGTON - (KRT) - Turning again to his stable of Dallas friends, President Bush nominated Hunt Oil Co. executive Jim Oberwetter on Monday as ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
Although Oberwetter has no diplomatic experience, foreign policy veterans and supporters in Dallas said he would make a good choice, in part because the Saudis - a key allies in a tumultuous region - put a premium on emissaries who have the president's ear.

Oberwetter, 59, chaired the Texas campaign committee of the first President George Bush in 1992. But his ties to the Bushes stretch to nearly four decades. As a student at the University of Texas at Austin, he became friends with
Karl Rove, a rising star in Young Republican circles who is now the president's top political adviser. After college, Oberwetter served the first President Bush - then a Houston congressman - as press secretary.
For the last 28 years he has worked for Hunt Oil, one of the world's largest independent producers. His current title is senior vice president of governmental and public affairs. He is a past chairman of the American Petroleum Institute, an industry trade group, and has taken an active role in Dallas civic affairs for years.
