Amnesty to free over 7000 inmates in Turkmenistan

The first of 7,093 amnestied prisoners have been freed in Turkmenistan in accordance with President Saparmurad Niyazov's decree. All of them will be home by November 21, when the Muslim fast ends, the Turkmen prosecuor general's office reported on Tuesday.

In September, Turkmenistan's Prosecutor General's Office proposed amnestying 6,135 prisoners, inlcuding 181 foreign citizens. The president proposed that the number should be increased and include people who had committed several crimes, but repented. The amnestied prisoners must swear on the Koran and bread, and since last year, on Niyazov's book "Rukhnama," not to commit any more crimes.

About 120,000 prisoners have been amnestied in Turkmenistan over the past 12 years.
