Left to rot in a supermax jail (Moussaoui/Times-UK)
The Times May 05, 2006

Left to rot in a supermax jail
By Tom Baldwin

HE MAY live to regret that he was not sentenced to death. Zacarias Moussaoui, 37, was told yesterday that he must spend the rest of his days at the “supermax” prison in Florence, Colorado, the bleakest and most secure of all American jails.

There, he will be kept in an 8ft (2.5m) by 5ft (1.5m) cell, 23 hours a day. He will have no chance to mix with other inmates and only fleeting contact with staff. His desk, bed and stool will be made of concrete, his mirror of steel. A tiny slit in the wall will be his only source of natural light. If he is allowed a television it will be black and white, showing only educational and religious programmes. His only comfort may be a copy of the Koran.

The prison, known as the “Alcatraz of the Rockies”, was built in 1994 at a cost of $60 million. It has 1,400 remote-controlled steel doors, motion detectors, pressure pads and gun towers.

ADX Florence is already home to Moussaoui’s friend, the British “shoe bomber”, Richard Reid. Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and Ramzi Yousef, jailed for conspiracy after the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Centre, are also there. But Moussaoui can forget about chatting with fellow terrorists.

1. Moussaoui is a "bit player" in the world of terrorism. His outcome
is of no significance with regard to suppressing terrorism. The U.S. will spend $40,000 per year for as long as he lives. That's a lot of money to spend on a "nobody".

2. I hope he lives a long, long life...
confined to a miserable, dirty hole of a cell. I'm glad he won't be executed. Now he's denied the martyrdom he craved.

4. "State murder would have given him a dignity he never deserved."

…Steve Gilliard: "Oh, fuck all this dramatic bullshit. Moussaoui was a half-wit, someone Al Qaeda barely trusted to get trained, and he fucked that up. State murder would have given him a dignity he never deserved."

7. This story is done
Unless this craven, deluded lunatic renounces his violence, which a life sentence gives him the opportunity to do, let him rot.

:nopity:

I take no solace in his sentence, but I refuse to give him any sympathy.

There's other work to do.

9. considering he was convicted of orwellian thought crimes
not that he wasn't a bad guy, just not nearly the bad guy they made him out to be. its a sad statement on the state of american justice. it won't be that long before its some non-brown skinned american who is being treated the same, then people will scratch their heads and wonder why its happening to THEM.

10. Hmmm

There, he will be kept in an 8ft (2.5m) by 5ft (1.5m) cell, 23 hours a day. He will have no chance to mix with other inmates and only fleeting contact with staff.

Funny this is what American psychiatric system does to innocent people who are called "crazy". For people with mental illness they call it "treatment" for criminals it is "punishment"..

I spent 18 months in a "quiet room" strikingly similar to the"cell" except that didn't have a sink, toilet or steel mirror. Just a mat on the floor and a heavily screened window you could not see a damn thing out of.If I had to pee I got my"limited contact with staff" and also I was drugged. Go figure..I was 17. And I had not broken any laws.

Think about it.
