'Jake did not kill himself' says wife (Aussie soldier in wrong coffin)
'Jake did not kill himself' says wife

May 06, 2006

THE widow of dead soldier Jake Kovco has described as "bullshit" suggestions that her husband took his own life.

Shelley Kovco last night revealed how she woke John Howard in a late-night conversation and told him he should intervene personally and get her husband's body home after the wrong coffin was returned to Melbourne last week.

"I pretty much told him to get one of his (expletive) jets and get over there himself and get my husband home," she told the Nine Network's A Current Affair.

Mrs Kovco said Mr Howard had told her that he understood how she felt to which she replied: "You have no (expletive) idea how I feel. I told him to (expletive) forget his wheat crisis and get my husband home."

She said amid the confusion of what happened in the Baghdad barracks - where a gun discharged, mortally wounding him in the head - only her husband knew the true story.

Mrs Kovco said that any suggestion of suicide was "absolute bullshit" and that her husband was looking forward to coming home from his tour of duty in Iraq.

1. The wrong body belongs to Bosnia
His family there still has not received their son. I wonder if that awful body transport contractor ever get this correct.

2. According to the army,
he had his browning rifle on a table beside him, loaded and cocked, and pointing straight at him, and just happened to bump it, and it just happened to go off and kill him.

And the other 2 soldiers who were in the room with him just happened to be looking the other way, and didn't see a thing.

And then the body just happened to get switched with another. ...

Personally, I don't believe a word of it. I'll be very surprised if an autopsy shows he was shot only once.

4. there has been no report of anything like that.
But this did remind me of Tillman's shooting.

At first I thought this was probably murder by the 2 soldiers he was with. They were just back from a patrol when it happened, and perhaps he was threatening to report them for something they'd done.
And for an Aussie soldier to threaten to dob, it would have to be something awfully bad that he'd seen.

But the too coincidental body switch makes it look as though someone higher up wanted his cause of death hidden from view.
