COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Denmark plans to cut 80 troops from its 530-strong contingent in the southern Iraqi city of Basra as part of a reorganization of its forces in the region, the government said Friday.

Denmark wants to reduce the number of army troops in Basra, who have been involved in training Iraqi forces among other tasks. At the same time, up to 70 air force staff and a C-130 Hercules transport plane would be sent to Amman, Jordan to assist U.N. reconstruction efforts in
Iraq.
"The Iraqis are so well-trained that we don't need to assign our staff to train them. So we have decided to reorganize the force," Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller said.
He said scaling back the troop level in Basra did not mean Denmark was reducing its overall commitment in Iraq.
