2. Yeah and they really gave it to Gays and Lesbians . This is only going
to help the fundraising of the religious right. Possibly help Bush get elected for the first time. This will give the right the opportunity to pass this marriage amendment. Then Gays and Lesbians and progressive allies will be spending the next 50 years overturning a constitutional amendment. It may not be PC to say this here- but I think this will hurt Gays and Lesibans in the short term, talking atleast 25years.. Just Liberal grand standing by these Justices, if they really were intrested in helping gays they would have done the wise thing, not the right thing. Let me say- I support Gays and Lesbians having marriage rights, but I realize the rest of the Country will be dead set against this at this time. A backlash will likely result. I hope I am wrong. How can people think a constitutional amendment defining marriage between a man and woman will not pass? For those who will say I am only limited in my view- I live in the south- etc. I remind them of the Knight Int. in California, it wasn't that long ago. My sympathy to Gays and Lesbians..this court did you no favors. My sympathy to all of us- This is only going to help the other side.

5. Keep fighting the successful fights of employment discrim. domestic
partnership, and within 5 years defacto gay marriage and 10years absolute. This is going to seem in your face- and a challange they will now respond.

4. I don't agree Prodemsouth
The gay marriage issue has to be framed properly, as one of keeping the government out of our personal lives and as having nothing to do with one's individual religion. If it's framed properly, then I think the religious right and liberals will sort of cancel each other out, leaving the battle for the presidency where it usual is, among moderate suburbanites.

Many suburbanites are closet sympathizers with gays because they have gay children, for instance. And many of these people will be turned off if the right wing is too nasty, which they're sure to be. A CNN poll shows that most young people support gay marriage. Most old people, I believe, will not consider this the main issue. And those people who do consider this the main issue already know who they're going to vote for. Civil rights galvanized the Democratic Party once. It has a chance of doing it again, but it has to be played carefully.

7. Thanks for your repectful reply I know this is a very sensitive subject.
And if I were gay I would feel pissed off and someone telling me to don't be to fast in demanding my rights. As to the framework and debate: They have already got the frame work to fight this laid out. - You will be hearing: "this is not a fight we wanted but this radical liberal court forced us to act". "We don't care what people do in the bedroom(they really do but thats another argument),but.. Marriage is a sacred institution, we are just opposed to gay marriage" "We are for tolerance, but.. We oppose gay bashing, but.." As to what you say about suburbanites, I again point to the California vote on Knight. Now I am interested in hearing how you think we should frame this debate.
