Did Bush Force British Minister Out?
Full 2 page story: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/05/07/politics/main1596108.shtml

CBS/AP) Two London papers have speculated this weekend that complaints by President George W. Bush forced a British minister from his post because of his opposition to the use of nuclear force against Iran.

The Independent suggests that a phone call from the U.S. president to British Prime Minister Tony Blair led to the removal of Foreign Secretary Jack Straw Friday.

The newspaper reports that friends of Straw believe Mr. Bush was extremely upset when Straw pronounced any use of nuclear weapons against Iran "nuts."

Both The Independent and the Guardian write that Straw's "fate was sealed" after a White House phone call to Blair.

Straw played a key role in more than two years of talks between Tehran and the European trio of Britain, France and Germany aimed at resolving the standoff over Iran's nuclear program. Negotiations broke down earlier this year when Iran said it was resuming its uranium enrichment activities.

3. British tabloids will have a field day with this story!
Another nail in Tony's long overdue coffin is to remind the public that he is Bush's poodle.

Kick Blair out now, or face a Tory PM later!

7. I am happy for Jack ...
It must have really bothered Jack to have to stand up and lie repeatedly to the british people,
and the world at large, that they didn't "sex-up" the dossier.

He did it to show unity with Blair, so Blair could get re-elected.

Well Jack, expect a hello from Claire Short, don't you wish you had opted-out when she did ?

Better late than never ...

8. Straw is in the Brown camp....
Blair has purged the cabinet of Gordon Brown supporters. I would imagine that's the primary reason for his demotion but you never can tell. Straw's stance on Iran certainly didn't endear him to Blair. But if Blair does wind up supporting force against Iran it would be his death knell in British Politics IMHO.

There's a fight for the PMship going on now. Let's hope Blair's ass gets kicked to the curb, although I doubt it will happen before next year. But things are shakin over here, so it's going to get very interesting in the coming days.

12. Iran is the key to Jack Straw's demotion
He said a military strike against Iran was inconceivable. His problem is that Tony Blair thinks differently.

May 5, 2006 03:15 PM

The key to the demotion of Jack Straw from foreign secretary is Iran. Mr Straw for more than a year, in his favourite outlet the BBC Today programme or at various press conferences, said repeatedly a military strike on Iran was inconceivable.

Politicians always try to avoid boxing themselves in, but Straw did on this issue: if a military strike had become a serious option, he would have been forced to resign.
...

The problem for Mr Straw is that Tony Blair does not view Iran the same way. He regards the threat posed by Iran as the most serious in the world today, and is even more messianic on the issue than George Bush. That does not mean that a military strike will happen but Mr Blair, like Mr Bush, thinks it is a good idea to keep the option on the table, if only to keep Iran guessing.

Downing Street phoned the Foreign Office several times to ask Mr Straw to stop being so categoric in ruling out a military strike. And the White House also phoned Downing Street to ask why Mr Straw kept saying these things. And that was before Mr Straw dismissed as "nuts" the prospect of a tactical nuclear strike on Iran, an option that Mr Bush subsequently refused to remove from the table.

13. Straw made his "completely nuts" statement nearly a month ago
April 10, 2006 to be exact. It has just reached Georgie's attention? Now that the Brits have started re-arranging their own deck chairs, this sounds like an attempt to make it look like he's masterminding the whole thing. I imagine that he's willing to throw Straw under the bus if he thinks it will save tony.
