Canada says deportation case could hurt U.S. ties (Torture by proxy case)
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N18206913.htm

OTTAWA, Nov 18 (Reuters) - A Canadian cabinet minister said on Tuesday that Ottawa may limit its intelligence sharing with Washington because of widespread concerns over the case of a man who was deported to Syria by U.S. agents.

Solicitor-General Wayne Easter -- in charge of Canada's law enforcement agencies -- spoke ahead of a Washington meeting with U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft on Wednesday where he will raise the issue of Syrian-born Canadian Maher Arar.

The 33-year-old computer technician was arrested by U.S. agents in September 2002 while changing planes in New York on his way home. He was held by the United States for several days then deported to Syria rather than Canada.

Arar, who was released by Syria only last month, said was regularly tortured during his time in a Damascus jail.

2. Good

It should hurt relations. It should hurt intelligence sharing. It was a very low and nasty thing to do to a citizen of Canada and entirely unnecessary. They could have deported him to Canada and let them sort out his intentions. But instead, rather than consult with our good neighbors and nearest ally, they chose torture in an inhumane Syrian prison.

On edit: I'm still waiting for this to show up in the mainstream press. I've watched it on CBC for going on three weeks now. Here - nothing.

4. recent article in Globe and Mail says this has messed up "the big idea"
--that is, plans to integrate US and Canadian economic and security policy!

Jim Stanford (an economist) pointed out that a lot of people at all levels of government are re-thinking this, in the light of what happened to Mr. Arar.
