Bush approval rating hits new low (31% @ USA TODAY/Gallup Poll)

Bush approval rating hits new low

WASHINGTON — President Bush's approval rating has slumped to 31% in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, the lowest of his presidency and a warning sign for Republicans in the November elections.

The survey of 1,013 adults, taken Friday through Sunday, shows Bush's standing down by 3 percentage points in a single week. His disapproval rating also reached a record: 65%. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.

"It is a challenging political environment," acknowledges Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, "but we are confident that ultimately voters in November will recognize that a Democrat Congress would simply not be equipped to ensure either economic or national security for our nation."

Bush's fall is being fueled by erosion among support from conservatives and Republicans. In the poll, 52% of conservatives and 68% of Republicans approved of the job he is doing. Both are record lows among those groups.

51. Right, and Nixon was intelligent, thing's were not that bad (relatively).
We had a long, drawn out war with far greater loss of life and health. It was costly and probably held back real growth for years to come. But we were not reviled, as we are today. The economy was beginning to stagnate but the numbers were at least reliable, unlike today when they're clearly cooked.

Most importantly, in terms of differences, Nixon was a very bright guy, he lived politics, knew the game, and made some amazing moves. He ran out of tricks and had decades of bad behavior to account for.

* has only been in politics a little over a decade and he has many more enemies than Nixon. No one in the opposition admires anything about him, they just fear his lashing out. * is intellectually limited. There's no debate. He screws up everything he touches. The only things * and his crew are skilled at are: stealing elections (no mean feat, btw); scaring people with the most outrageous lies; and, breaking every single rule, all the time, in a way never seen before in this country. We need to look to Germany in the...;)

It's the beginning of a long, dangerous slide that will result in both Cheney and Bush removed from office. Don't worry about Cheney becoming president, he'll probably go first. Don't worry about the Republican majorities in Congress. This president is simply awful, a danger to mankind, and people have enough information in the USA through alternative channels to know that. MSM better be careful or they'll face a backlash the likes of which has never been seen.

It's bad for * and about to get much worse. The foolishness of Cheney to blame CIA for 911 on national television shows how out of control the whole system is. Dick, payback is a you know what...

Just think what happens when a really pissed off member of the intelligence community with access to the full aggregation of information on everything we care about decides, "screw it, this goes on the internet now"...Crooks & Liars couldn't handle the load on it's very best day.

Welcome to the end of the world as you know it * and your fellow nut case neocons. It's your time, your future awaits...perhaps in Belize or Dubai.

"...we are confident that ultimately voters in November will recognize that a Democrat Congress would simply not be equipped to ensure either economic or national security for our nation."

HOW could ANYONE --whether they're Dem's, Independents or Greens; even Yahoos or bloody Troglodytes-- possibly do any worse?

151. Bush is on the same schedule as Nixon.
The drip drip drip of criminal revelations, the steady slide in the polls, all at the same point in his 2nd term. He'll be out by August, as I've said for a long time now.

And yah, screwing the CIA multiple times was a pretty bad idea. One thing my Momma always taught me is "Don't f--- with the CIA!" I guess Babs and Bush Sr. thought their dim son could be the exception because of Daddy's ties. Nope, if you ignore the intelligence they provide, let a national catastrophe happen as a result, then blame the CIA, then ignore their intelligence again on WMDs, let another catastrophe happen, blame them again, and then out one of their NOC operatives, resulting in who knows how many deaths of invaluable foreign contacts, you're pretty well dead. Then to top it off, you send in an asshole (in addition to Cheney's bullying visits I mean), who shreds the place and drives out all the best people. They've forced Goss out from the inside, and the rebellion is just beginning. The Bush regime is toast.

5. They can't run far enough away from him these days
This morning on the way to work, I saw a campaign sign that identified the politician as a "Reagan Republican." What a sham. I'm sure they were backing Bush all the way on all the legislation he's pushed but now that elections are drawing near, they pretend to have nothing to do with him. If I had some stickers and the kahoonas to do it, I'd slap "Bush" right over top of the "Reagan" part of those signs. They are Bush Republicans and unless they've been voting Democratic for the last five-six years, they are STILL Bush Republicans, no matter how hard they try to make it seem otherwise.

121. "Reagan Republicans" vs. "bu$h Republicans"
Edited on Mon May-08-06 10:14 PM by Art_from_Ark
There's a big difference. The "Reagan Republicans" supported a man who

1) was woefully uninformed and incurious, but "affable"
2) invaded defenseless countries
3) made fun of the weakest members of society
4) supported the military-industrial complex at the expense of everything else
5) appointed unqualified party hacks and sycophants to nearly all major positions in government
6) was involved, along with his cohorts, in all sorts of scandals
7) supported death squads in 3rd world countries
8) got major support from right-wing kooks, religious nutcases, and a compliant media
9) held the American worker in disdain
10) ran up the biggest budget deficit in history, up to that point

Yeah, I can see how the "Reagan Republicans" would want to distance themselves from the "bu$h Republicans"
:sarcasm:

146. I don't understand the Reagan worship myself.
The only thing I can think of is, right-wingers seem to need to have gods to worship and devils to revile, not just in the spiritual/cosmic realm, but in politics as well. Look at the irrational Clinton hatred we saw in the 90s. Listen to the rightie wackos shriek about Hillary, Ted Kennedy, Barbra Streisand and the other devils in their minds.

The Reagan worshippers seemed to have missed that he was an actor. His "affable" persona was an act, masking the cruel hard-heartedness and me-first narcissism that characterizes right-wingers.

Gimme a "2". Gimme a "8". What's that spell? That spells "28", and that means that the Great Decider has done what he has been trying to do his entire pampered and protected life: beat his father at something. Senior's lowest approval rating was 29. Way to go, Decider - way to go.
When a president completely ignores 70% of Americans, he and his party should pay, and pay dearly, in November.

48. My wife's grandparents still love Bush.
They're both in their mid-90's and semi-gaga. They're still big fans of the GWOT (Grandpa thinks we found WMD in Iraq, and is pretty sure Saddam knocked down the Twin Towers). But the big deal is Bush's tax-cuts--especially getting rid of the estate tax, which is, understandably, on their minds a lot. Needless to say, they both watch Fox News to the exclusion of all other news media. I tried to tell them that voting day had changed to the first Wednesday in November back in '04, but they'd already voted by mail. The only good news about them is that they live in CA, so their votes for Bush didn't count.

49. Things will start exploding and then they will just get a new puppet
While it is heartening that Americans are wising up but we should not allow them to place all of the blame on the idiot prince as in the example of Nixon who replaced himself with another puppet, Gerald Ford, and we all went back to sleep. Then, after the brief Carter interlude, they hired an actor (Reagan)to manifest their lie and were back in the saddle running death squads, supplying WMDs to America's sworn enemies and looting the economic system from the S&Ls to the benevolent programs created to help the poor and disabled and generally raise our standard of living.

We must broaden our focus to include the small number of people who actually comprise the oligarchy for which Bush, like his father and grandfather, are just front men. Bush is just a boil on our collective face and without systemic treatment more boils will pop up in the future and each wave will be worse than the last until the infection is eradicated system wide.

90. It is easier to treat the problem when there are fewer boils...
...just as it is easier to abort Rosemary's baby (the devil's spawn)in the first days of pregnancy. Cleaning the infection out of both parties and our entire system should be welcomed by more people now than ever. As one Republican said "You may fool all of the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." And I don't know who said "The best way to repeal a bad law is to enforce it vigorously" but these two well known sayings seem to apply to the present situation. I think we are down near the minimum number of fooled people and many people are now suffering under the yoke of bad legislation administered by bad leaders. Sorry for getting a bit carried away with the analogies.

Thank you for your kind words of welcome.

"It is a challenging political environment," acknowledges Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, "but we are confident that ultimately voters in November will recognize that a Democrat Congress would simply not be equipped to ensure either economic or national security for our nation."

88. Truman got down to 23% approval, Nixon 24%
The all-time worst numbers belong to Harry Truman (23%), who also holds the record for the biggest range in approval rating. George H. W. Bush eventually sank to 29%. Carter hit 28%, and Nixon was at 24% before he resigned. For a great survey of approval ratings and how they can affect elections, check out this 2003 USA Today article.

Which is great, except for one thing. There's a faction in this regime who would stop at nothing to save themselves.

I, for one, worry about that a lot.

As the approval rating continues to decline, the regime will need Something to induce the country to fall in line. May be time to start wrapping your house in duct tape, per Dept. of Homeland Security instructions...

"lowest of his presidency and a warning sign for Republicans in the November elections."

113. What you didn't hear
was a glimmer of the usual calculations concerning "bottoming out" or an approaching uptick. As long as you don't hear that they KNOW the numbers will continue in the usual slow process involved in public reaction. And when a base is fractured like the lockstep ones Bush had, the meltdown is a second fire with new material. People soon will be afraid to support Bush because who is more afraid of Conservative opinion than Conservatives themselves?

What will be left in the 'core" will be utterly isolated groups that don't read Conservative journals per se and usually geographically isolated and used to such feelings as walking down the streets and thinking themselves a persecuted minority. Even there, of course, the march of truth itself, not just opinion begins its longer slower march that even these polls do not reflect yet. The polls unfortunately still reflect disappointment more than total awakening to the lies, the fact we are losing economically and militarily and the image of the government leadership is cracked and unsustainable. What we still have is a general, vaguely informed instinctive groupthink shifting.

The impact of truth has barely begun and when they realize that the media is involved in inhibiting good judgment they will suddenly sink faster than respect for the GOP Congress. The good news that this has not massively happened yet is very bad news for all the enablers and THEY still seem lost in an entitlement daze, knocking on your TV screens and radios from the inside, demanding respect and whining and bullying.

"It is a challenging political environment," acknowledges Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, "but we are confident that ultimately voters in November will recognize that a Democrat Congress would simply not be equipped to ensure either economic or national security for our nation."

144. How Bush can escape this mess
Okay, first off, Darth Cheney resigns 'for health reasons'. Maybe a dislocated shoulder from shooting peasants (and not, I'm not mispelling 'pheasant')

Second, King George nominates Bill Clinton/Al Gore/Howard Dean/Russ Feingold/Wes Clark as veep.

Third, King George resigns and becomes (once again) the Crawford Village Idiot.

Fourth, the new veep (Bill Clinton/Al Gore/Howard Dean/Russ Feingold/Wes Clark) becomes the new president, appoints a decent veep, and gets this country back on track!

156. NYT: Bush's Public Approval at Low Point (NYT/CBS poll 31%)
Bush's Public Approval at Low Point
By ADAM NAGOURNEY
Published: May 9, 2006

Americans have a bleaker view of the country's direction than at any time in more than two decades, and sharp disapproval of President Bush's handling of gasoline prices has combined with intensified unhappiness about Iraq to create a grim political environment for the White House and Congressional Republicans, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

Mr. Bush's approval rating for his management of foreign policy, Iraq and the economy have fallen to the lowest levels of his presidency. He drew poor marks on the specific issues that have been at the top of the national agenda in recent months — in particular, immigration and gas prices — underscoring the difficulty the administration faces in reversing its political fortunes.

Just 13 percent approved of Mr. Bush's handling of rising gas prices. Only one-quarter said they approved of his handling of immigration....The poll showed a continued decline in support for the war, the issue that has most eaten into Mr. Bush's public support. The percentage of respondents who said going to war in Iraq was the correct decision slipped to a new low of 39 percent, down from 47 percent in January. Two-thirds said they have little or no confidence that Mr. Bush will be able to successfully end the war there....

***

Mr. Bush's political strength continues to dissipate. About two-thirds of voters said that Mr. Bush does not share their priorities, up from just over half right before his reelection in 2004. About two thirds said and that the country is in worse shape than it was when he came to power six years ago. Forty-two percent of respondents say they consider Mr. Bush a strong leader, a drop of 11 points since January.

Mr. Bush's overall job approval rating hit another new low, 31 percent, tying the low point of his father, George H. W. Bush, in July 1992, four months before the elder Mr. Bush lost his bid for a second term to Bill Clinton. That is the third lowest approval rating of any president in 50 years; only Richard M. Nixon and Jimmy Carter were viewed less favorably....

parasitic pathogenic bacteria

The FAUX people eat on their own BS. It is essentially a closed system.

It is unfortunate that they did not apply this approach to energy policy. Some bacteria produce 50% oil content and grow on effluence and CO2. The bacteria doubles in volume every 2 to 7 days. DOE shut that project down after successful trial for some reason.

Poll Gives Bush Worst Marks Yet on Major Issues
By ADAM NAGOURNEY and MEGAN THEE

Americans have a bleaker view of the country's direction than at any time in more than two decades, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. Sharp disapproval of President Bush's handling of gasoline prices has combined with intensified unhappiness about Iraq to create a grim political environment for the White House and Congressional Republicans.

Just 13 percent approved of Mr. Bush's handling of rising gasoline prices. About a quarter said they approved of his handling of immigration, as Congressional Republicans try to come up with a compromise for handling the influx of illegal immigrants into the country.

The poll showed a further decline in support for the Iraq war, the issue that has most eaten into Mr. Bush's public support. The percentage of respondents who said going to war in Iraq was the correct decision slipped to a new low of 39 percent, down from 47 percent in January. Two-thirds said they had little or no confidence that Mr. Bush could successfully end the war.

Mr. Bush's political strength continues to dissipate. About two-thirds of poll respondents said he did not share their priorities, up from just over half right before his re-election in 2004. Mr. Bush is even losing support from what has been his base: 51 percent of conservatives and 69 percent of Republicans approve of the way Mr. Bush is handling his job. In both cases, those figures are a substantial drop in support from four months ago.
