Rice Says Iran's Letter Not an Overture
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060508/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/rice_interview_4

NEW YORK - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice dismissed a surprise letter that Iran's president sent to President Bush on Monday, saying it did not seriously address the standoff over Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the top U.S. diplomat said the letter from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was 17 or 18 pages long and covered history, philosophy and religion. It was not a diplomatic opening, she said.

"This letter isn't it. This letter is not the place that one would find an opening to engage on the nuclear issue or anything of the sort," Rice said. "It isn't addressing the issues that we're dealing with in a concrete way."

Rice's comments were the most detailed response from the United States to the letter, the first from an Iranian head of state to an American president in 27 years. She would not discuss the contents in detail but made clear that the United States would not change its tack on Iran.

"There's nothing in here that would suggest that we're on any different course than we were before we got the letter," Rice said.

9. They didn't even make the contents available to Bush.
He was "briefed" on the contents. Who's really running this country?

drop us a note or give us a call sometime mid-November. For the moment we need all Americans to fear you. So far you have been doing great. Thanks so much.
Sincerely, Condi

7. 18 pages. Who needs to respond with diplomacy?
Edited on Mon May-08-06 06:50 PM by MessiahRp
We can just denounce the whole fucking thing and not respond. We'll just posture, threaten and invade like we did in Iraq.

Hey North Korea, you're next!

Negotiating is for the weak.

in using diplomacy, obviously. That has been proven in their dealing with Iraq. We simply don't have leadership talent running our country.

16. According to BBC account.
The letter from Iran supposedly contains solutions to the Iranian nuclear question. The letter should be made public.

We have no way to accurately evaluate Rice's response or the BBC "account" without reading it for ourselves.

20. Rice should turn her salary back over to taxpayers
Because we don't need to pay anybody to do absolutely nothing in their job like that.

Let AIPAC pay her salary, it is their interest she is serving, not that of the United States.

27. This is exactly why impeachment is so important
Not just as punishment for the high crimes and misdemeanors, but to put an end to them. Those cowardly Dems in Congress don't seem to realize that things can get worse. Iran is indeed a serious problem, which will only be made much worse by this adminstration's PNAC-neocon imperialistic agenda.

31. Thanks - I didn't see any concrete solutions to the nuclear situation
Edited on Tue May-09-06 10:36 AM by slackmaster
The letter consists of rhetorical questions, citations from scripture, a few braid-dead-obvious statements of fact, and in invitation to go ape-shit monotheistic religious.

As far as political solutions, it might as well say "Let's all sit in a circle and sing Kum-ba-yah together."
