President rejects calls to extend Medicare deadline

Robyn Shelton and Jim Stratton
May 10, 2006

President Bush on Tuesday rejected Democratic challenges to extend the sign-up period for Medicare's new prescription-drug plan through the end of the year.

Democrats said an extension was necessary because millions of confused Americans need more time to make a decision.

But the president, who will speak with seniors today in Orlando, said the May 15 deadline is important because "deadlines help people understand there is finality, and people have to get after it."

The president responded to the criticism during stops in Fort Lauderdale and Tampa on a three-day blitz through Florida to promote the prescription-drug plans.

With only six days left for people to sign up for coverage this year, Democrats and Republicans are painting two sharply different views of the new Medicare program.
