Marathon Oil Co. to explore in Syria
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=630b719c6f065bbd

Syria has signed a $127 million deal with Houston's Marathon Oil Co. for oil and natural exploration in the central part of the nation.

The 25-year deal calls for Marathon to finance and build all surface facilities needed to collect, process and transport oil and gas in the Al Shaer and Al Sharafieh fields near Homs, 97 miles northwest of Damascus, Gulf Daily News reported Wednesday.

The deal was first reported by the official Syrian news agency.

The two fields are expected to yield some 2 million cubic meters of gas per day, plus some 5,000 barrels of oil and 100 metric tons of liquid gas, Gulf Daily reported.

3. Geographical position.
Suez canal for one.

Its proximity to Israel and its location on the African continent matter as well. It borders Sudan and Libya, both of which are considered hot spots and major power players in African politics. Both of which have large natural gas and oil deposits.
