President says his letter to President Bush was invitation to Islam

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here Thursday that his letter to President George W. Bush did not concern the nuclear dossier, but rather was an invitation to Islam and the prophets culture.

He made the above remarks in reply to a reporter while attending press conference on his letter to President Bush in Jakarta in the afternoon of the third day of his stay in Jakarta.

Stressing that the letter was beyond the nuclear issue, the chief executive said that in principle, the country's nuclear case is not so significant to make him write a letter about it.

"We act according to laws and our activities are quite clear. We are rather intent on solving more fundamental global matters.

1. Well, have to say it, but the guy's point might have been that
the "following Jesus" thing wasn't working out too well for him (he appears to have difficulty following the teachings)...so hey....

2. That was clear enough to people that read it.
Ahmedinejad references theology that, in most forms of Xianity, is blasphemous. And was calling on * to join him in monotheism--Jesus isn't God, and not the son of God--or to submit. The word 'invitation' even shows up in the translation. Ahmedinejad's Jesus is not the Jesus believed in by nearly any Xian sect; if there's one that accepts the Muslim's Jesus, I haven't heard of it.

The letter is a peace overture. Ahmedinejad's Islam is a religion of peace: when everybody submits to Allah, or properly submits to Muslim rule, there will be peace. The letter also a slap in the face, rather like having * write to Ahmedinejad or Olmert asking him to convert.

That people read a writing from a foreign head of state in terms of their own preconceptions and wants is the antithesis and a denial of multiculturalism and inter-cultural understanding, but there you have it. Only RWers, as far as I know, picked up on it and were brave enough to say it. Paradoxical, isn't it? Nice to see it confirmed by the source.

3. This is got to hurt.
Conservatives everywhere, whether Jewish or Christan, paleocon or neocon, in Europe, in America or in Asia, are not that religious but they hate these kind of zingers. To them its all about "pride", "purity of ideals", "always right, even when wrong", and other Nazi-like bullshit. This was a clear shot at conservative soft spot.
