WP: Path Clear for Harris in Senate Bid
Republicans Unable to Recruit an Alternative Candidate

The White House and Florida Gov. Jeb Bush were again unable to recruit an alternative candidate to Rep. Katherine Harris in the state's U.S. Senate race yesterday as Florida's top legislative leader announced that he will not run. The decision virtually ensures that the controversial congresswoman will be the Republican nominee against Sen. Bill Nelson (D).

Asked whether Harris could win the seat, Florida GOP communications director Jeff Sadosky offered something less than a ringing endorsement. "We'll have to wait and see what happens between now and Friday," he said. Friday is Florida's last day for candidates to file for federal office.

Harris insisted that she has "turned it around" and that going forward she will turn the focus onto Nelson, who is seeking a second term, and away from herself. "This isn't about me," she said.

Nonetheless, the pessimism over Harris's chances in a state that had been seen as one of the Republicans' best opportunities to gain a U.S. Senate seat shows the difficulty posed by the national political environment, which favors Democrats.

12. People keep bringing that up--what's that about? & how're his poll #s?
It's kind of unheard-of these days for a governor to run for the Senate. For one thing, they go from being a big CEO to being one vote among many. For another thing, those votes provide a paper trail for any opponents. And finally, that paper trail is hard to overcome when running for President.

Just asking.

13. I just feel it in my bones

They are afraid of Harris
Jeb would be in Washington and able to watch Jr. more closely.

He is tired of Florida.
He wants the two experiences, Gov. and Senator

I just feel it.

If not Senator, watch GW appoint him in Condi's place when Cheney "leaves."

7. I don't live in Florida, but given the choice between Harris and Nelson
I hope she spends all of her money in a losing campaign.

10. We should not assume
anything about Jeb Bush and his den of snakes. NEVER write these people off, ever.

Always assume that they're going to hatch one more plot, one more way out.

I personally would be shocked if Jeb lets this one go.

14. They may decide to cut their losses
After all, the seat is Democratic now anyway, so it won't be a loss on the Republican scorecard. The Bushes would surely like to pick up this Senate seat, but the upside is that Katherine Harris gets out of politics forever after this gut-crunching defeat and disappears from the national scene.

I don't see Jeb jumping in here; his negatives in Florida, the Bush family name, and the possibility that the national media would see this as a mini-referendum on Stupidhead is just too risky.

15. I don't think anyone would buy Jeb jumping
into the race. It smells too much like a manipulation of the political system, which is exactly what it would be. People are sick of this family.

16. This won't touch the * crime family directly.
Let Harris bankrupt herself, if she's really that committed to public service. I suspect, however, that the Whore of Babylon will never risk true poverty, even if she's disloyal enough to refuse to drop out when nudged.

If she's stupid enough to try to win, she'd better pray that she does. If she defies the *ies and loses, she will be out in the cold.
