Red Cross Chief 'Deplores' White House
Red Cross Chief 'Deplores' White House

GENEVA (AP) - The head of the international Red Cross on Friday deplored the Bush administration's refusal to allow its delegates to visit detainees in secret detention.

In an unusually strongly worded statement, the neutral agency known for its discretion expressed disappointment that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other officials refused to yield to its demand.

``No matter how legitimate the grounds for detention, there exists no right to conceal a person's whereabouts or to deny that he or she is being detained,'' said Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, following a series of top-level meetings in Washington.

The ICRC is designated by the Geneva Conventions on warfare as the organization to visit prisoners of war. It is the only independent body the United States allows to visit terror suspects detained in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but it has long been demanding access to detainees in ``undisclosed locations.''

4. They're probably so TIRED of these guys by now. If they fail to react
properly, they just get shot, or thrown in prison. What a goddamned shame.

That guy doesn't look as if he has won any "hearts and minds" in a long, long time.

Peace on earth, good will to men. Yeah, right.

...community is having quiet discussions about how to deal with the beast our nation has become. They're not without resources and smarts and when they decide to kick the last leg out from under our fragile, teetering economy we're really going to suffer. They don't want to do it, but BushCo isn't leaving them much choice.

23. Yes, and both the Axis and the Allies cleaned up the camps
before the RC actually got to go in.

But, even so, there was a reserve of menace in having the RC make even those visits.

12. Well, from what I understand,
the Red Cross needs some looking into, just like the Bush administration. I've read that a huge amount of their money gets funneled....

somewhere else. Think: salaries, perks, travel, bonuses.

18. The International RC is
headed by a Frenchman, Jean Pierre Revel. The American Red Cross, as far as I know, is administration top-heavy. Their reputation for gtting the job done has been in question in the past.

13. This situation is a great cause for shame.
Perhaps the greatest cause the Bush regime has given us, next to the brutality in Iraq.
