Cops told Pat K was at watering hole before crash

Capitol police in Washington, D.C., investigating U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy’s early-morning car wreck have been told by witnesses that the Rhode Island congressman was at a Capitol Hill bar before the crash, the Herald has learned.

A source close to the probe said witnesses have told detectives that Kennedy was at the Hawk & Dove before he slammed his Ford Mustang into a security barrier near the U.S. Capitol. The source added that cops are continuing to seek evidence to confirm that Kennedy was at the watering hole.

The Herald reported last week that a Hawk & Dove hostess said the 38-year-old pol is a frequent customer and was drinking in the bar before the May 4 crash. Kennedy has denied he was drinking, blaming the accident on a cocktail of prescription painkillers and sleeping pills. He has since checked into a Minnesota rehab.

A Kennedy spokeswoman declined comment. A Capitol police spokeswoman also refused comment, citing the ongoing probe.

3. He 'slammed' his car into a security barrier? I do more damage
on my feet than he did in his Mustang. Don't get me wrong, if he was drinking and driving he should be in trouble. But I think that this article is a little bit of rabid overkill. They need to stick to the facts, not see how much sensationalism they can generate.

4. Don't they have more important things to report about right now???
Yeah, I know it's the Boston Herald, the print equivalent of Faux News. But I really don't give a crap what Patrick Kennedy was doing that night. He crashed his car, no one was injured or killed, and he admits he was under the influence of some substance or another. It's time to get past this distraction of a story. People crash their cars into things all the time. At least he didn't shoot anything or anybody while he was tanked, like Cheney.

There's real friggin' news happening all around us. They should try reporting some of that for a change.

5. Not a bad place to have a drink actually...
...and the food is good too.
But this all adds up to just a distraction from the real issues currently bedeviling Chimposter and Co.

I live in Alexandria, VA., but was in Pittsburgh last week to visit relatives. While having a lovely portion of Italian sausage and greens at one of my favorite restaurants, some drunk idiot freeper was going on and on for about 20 minutes about Patrick Kennedy's accident.
When I pointed out to the person that he was surely as impaired at the moment as Kennedy would have been, he glared at me and the place went silent.

I told him I couldn't believe that he could get so worked up about someone's possible DUI but not a word about:

--sending 2500 sons and daughters off to die in a phony war, without giving them even the resources to fight the war. Oh, and let's not forget cutting their benefits while they are dodging bullets and bombs...
--an economy that (once again) benefits only the richest at the expense of the working class and poor
--corruption far and wide at every level of government
--widespread dishonesty and deception on a scale unseen since Nixon. And maybe not even then.
--the disastrous mishadling of the Katrina situation
--spying on ordinary citizens while trampling on the Constitution and Bill of Rights
--dirty tricks politics such as the outing of a covert CIA agent as a revenge tactic

He left.
I enjoyed the rest of my food and washed it down with a very nice martini.

20. What fun! Did you mention W's multiple DUIs?
I forget how many times he was arrested for drunk driving, but let's just say it's lucky for him there was no three strikes law in place.

...I forgot about that. Of course with this administration, it's hard to keep track of all the hypocrisy and scandals! I should've mentioned Cheney's DUI's also...

If anyone attacks him, be sure to accuse them of being anti-Christian.

10. The fundies will point out that PK is Catholic, so he's NOT Christian.
Catholics are the worst of the worst according to Protestant fundamentalists, and most certainly NOT "true Christians".

11. This is so dumb! The cops miss up by letting him go and
who really cares that he scratched up his own car. What the cops need to do is just file this under "what not to do, when dealing with a person of power", then they can go bang their head up against a wall:banghead:

14. Tough luck, cops.
You let him go without sobriety testing. Your witnesses are usless now.

The story I heard was that he got out of bed in an Ambien sleep-walk. I'd like to know whether witnesses can disprove that.

15. This just underscores what my grandpa warned me about
If you ever date a man whose last name is Kennedy, don't get in a car if he's driving or a plane if he's flying.

What drives me nuts about the Kennedy's is that politically, I agree with them most of the time. But some of the family members have some serious problems and they can be a real embarrassment to democrats.

Teddy's older son, Teddy Jr., is a very respectable man. He was the one who had cancer and had his leg amputated as a kid. He's been an advocate for the disabled since reaching adulthood.

16. It's also a RESTAURANT (and one he frequents). Good lord.
And it's apparently one of Kennedy's regular hangouts, because I used to see him there almost every time I ate at the Hawk & Dove when I lived in DC in the late '90s. I saw him there for breakfast. I saw him there mid-day. I saw him there at late-dinner-time.

Being spotted at the Hawk & Dove in NO way means he was there drinking.

17. Stuff like this happens EVERY day in most towns in America
Edited on Fri May-12-06 10:50 AM by SoCalDem
Every town has its share of VIPs who are routinely handled with kid gloves when "stuff happens"..

The problem for DC cops is that there are LOTS of them in their town.

Whatever happened, no one was hurt, and for whatever reason, the cops chose to let him off easy. Their actions should be scrutinized within their department. Of course once the name of the "perpetrator" was known, it was impossible to avoid publicity, so Kennedy has to take his lumps too.

People have their own lives to compare events and logic tells most people that if you are "at work" until midnight, and have a crash at 3 am, it's at least possible (probably likely) that you stopped somewhere to kill some time (or unwind) and were on your way home..

Embarrassment causes people to say things that later on turn out to be false, but they just cannot stop themselves from trying to make the incident go away.

It's human nature..

24. Why wasn't he given a breathalyzer? Oh Never mind.
"The crash sparked a furor within the Capitol Police Department after angry patrol officers said higher-ranking cops blocked them from giving Kennedy a sobriety test. Police union head Lou Cannon said two watch commanders on duty the night of the crash have been transferred.
A police report on the 2:45 a.m. crash cited alcohol as a factor, describing Kennedy as slurring his speech, being “unsure” on his feet and having red and watery eyes.
Kennedy told cops he was on his way to a House vote, even though Congress had adjourned three hours earlier."
