Snow Makes Solo Debut at Chaotic Briefing

WASHINGTON - Welcome to the waltz, Tony.

New White House press secretary Tony Snow suffered a couple missteps in his first question-and-answer session with the White House press corps Friday.

Snow danced around several queries by saying he did not know enough to answer. And although he had at times been harshly critical of President Bush as a Fox News commentator and conservative radio host, Snow clearly was being careful not to step on the wrong toes now that he speaks on behalf of Bush.

For instance, one reporter asked about the government's abrupt end this week to an inquiry into a warrantless eavesdropping program because the National Security Agency refused to grant Justice Department lawyers the necessary security clearance.

Snow deferred that one to deputy press secretary Dana Perino. "There's a very limited number of people who are briefed on that program," she said.

1. I Thought Snow Took The Job Under The Conditions That He Be....
critically involved in the WH. Now he's saying 'there's a very limited number of people who are briefed on that program'.

Will this happen often - that he is not in the loop? Will we be seeing his resignation being tendered soon because *Co didn't live up to their end of the bargain? Probably he'll just say he wants to spend more time with his family.

2. I KNEW IT
main reason to have a new guy: so he can repeatedly say things like "i'm the new guy, i don't know yet' and 'the last guy said that - NOT ME'

and also, can we blow this out of context quote up :

Tony Snow at First Press Gaggle: "This is just a mess"

3. and he's still in the "honeymoon" period.
He'll be following in Snotty's footsteps in no time. "I cannot comment on an ongoing investigation."

10. I think this was a report on the press gaggle.

Which I understand isn't televised. Think of it as batting practice.

On Friday, he scheduled his first informal back-and-forth with the press, an informal, off-camera session called the "gaggle" which White House press secretaries typically hold in the mornings as a sort of warmup for The Big Dance — the formal White House daily news briefing.

13. Just dipping his toe in the water
Gaggles are not televised.

Next week should be fun. He's got to get in front of the cameras sooner or later.

6. For an Admin who usually names things opposite of what they are...
isn't it ironic when they gave us Snow, they gave us just that "a Snow job" that'll bury us in snow-drifts of lies year 'round now. Even IF he chooses NOT to give press conferences. He still has to issue Press Releases, doesn't he?

Maybe not. To this Admin, the people's "need-to-know" has never much been a high priority.

7. This administration has been the master
of compartmentalization of information. This is another illustration of that tactic in action. NO ONE knows what all the secrets are. They will be retiring the Snow-blower before too long.

15. He'll soon be regretting his decision to take this job.
Coming from the delusional news network, he has no idea what the reality is. What does he think, that 29% is an aberration?
