Gatlin smashes world record (100 M)

"Doha - America's Justin Gatlin set a new 100m world record - with a time of 9.76 seconds - at the Qatar Super Grand Prix on Friday.

The Olympic champion bettered the old mark of 9.77 seconds, set in Athens last year by Jamaica's Asafa Powell.

The 24-year-old American, who clocked 9.85 seconds in the semi-final, was overjoyed by his record. "

Folks, that is really fast.

1. "Smash"?
Is besting a world record by the smallest possible margin 'smashing' it?

14. How ironical. I doubt this record will ever be broken again at sea level.

We have to face it: we reached our limits.

16. Nope. It's a question of accuracy of measure.
9.765 vs. 9.764, etc... Thats' an infinite regression.

4. Kudos to Gatlin.
Run, Justin, Run. I hope he can bring home the gold in 2008. The 100m is my favorite Summer Olympics event.

7. 1,500, perhaps?
The mile was never an Olympic event. The 1,500m is the closest equivalent.

5. I remember when this time would win the 100-yard dash.

But that was "yards." This is phenomenal since Gatlin is running almost 10 yards further.

on edit: a little over 28 feet

15. It would be nice to think these records weren't helped by drugs
I tend to be cynical about these things though, after all we have seen. I mean, can training methods really be that much better than they were ten or fifteen years ago? Nutrition? Genetics? What is it?

17. *sigh* That's the first thing I thought of
"What's he been taking, and how did he mask it." Track and field and baseball -- I can't accept ANY of the records as honest any more... even though some of them may be. It just all feels tainted now.

18. Coached by Trevor Graham - No stranger to controversy
snip
At least five of Graham's athletes have tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Four others he has coached face USADA doping violation charges.
