Jail riots follow Brazil attacks (at least 30 dead in Sau Paulo)
Edited on Sun May-14-06 10:04 AM by muriel_volestrangler
Riots have broken out in 18 prisons in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo after a wave of attacks on the streets left at least 30 people dead.
...
About 100 people have been taken hostage by prison inmates.

Armed criminals targeted officers in 55 attacks in the early hours of Saturday. Nineteen of the dead were policemen.
...
PCC leaders were being questioned on the subject when the attacks started on Friday night, targeting officers in police stations, mobile units, at their homes or in bars.

1. Ah, the unintended consequences of drug prohibition.
These "commands" are basically drug dealing operations. Given the Brazilian state's inability or disinterest in providing services to the city's teeming favelas (slums), the commands basically govern them now. There have been previous incidents...

5. ... or intended
The purpose of the drugs war is to corrupt and destroy civil society.
Its working very well, and no wonder it works so well, given who was
behind it... do you think any one of those racists feels sorry for the
non-whites in brazil their war is killing... heck they're having a
party... they love their racist drugs war, and the more it destroys other
countries, the more they need more guns and war machines we can sell them.

Until they too can join the prison states of america at the bottom of hell.

3. The 'commands' seem to be purely criminal, rather than political
so I don't really see how 'right wing' or 'left wing' affects this story. It seems that the state of Sao Paulo is trying to assert itself over organised crime - which indicates sincerity, if not necessarily success.

4. what i meant was, that a LW government would have tried by now
to end the harsh levels of poverty that cause gangs to form and succed.

But RW resistance to the end of poverty could have stymied such a move by Silva.

Anteceedent... LBJ had a war on poverty.

I have an open mind on silva.. i just not up on what is going on in brazil.
