HARTFORD, Conn. -- At least 11 U.S. service members who committed suicide in Iraq in 2004 and 2005 were reportedly kept on duty despite exhibiting signs of psychological problems, according to a recent newspaper report.
The Hartford Courant reports there were numerous cases in which the military failed to follow its own regulations in screening, treating and evacuating mentally unfit troops from Iraq.
The newspaper cites records obtained under the federal Freedom of Information Act and more than 100 interviews of families and military personnel.
The Courant reports that some troops who developed post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Iraq were sent back into combat, increasing the risk to their mental health.
